Co-Regulation in Everyday Life Some People Change Our Nervous System Simply by Entering a Room Imagine a very simple scene. You are having a difficult day. Your breathing is shallow. Your mind won't stop thinking. Your body feels activated. Then someone arrives. They don't do anything extraordinary. They sit down. They look at you calmly. They speak slowly. They don't try to solve your life. And after a few minutes, you notice something unexpected. Your body has changed. Your breathing is a little more spacious. Your shoulders have dropped. Your jaw has softened. The problem is still there. But you are no longer holding it in quite the same way. Most people have experienced something like this. And probably the opposite as well. Walking into a room where someone is deeply tense, irritated, or anxious and noticing that, without intending to, your own body begins to speed up. As though the nervous system had responded before an explanation ever appeared. For a long time, we understood these experiences as something subjective and difficult to study. Today, research offers biological, psychological, and relational perspectives that help us understand some of the ways human beings influence one another. One of the concepts used to describe part of this process is co-regulation. Co-regulation refers to the processes through which people support and influence one another in the organization of emotional, physiological, and behavioral states. It is not a technique. It is not a skill reserved for therapists. And it does not mean that we can control another person's nervous system. It is a deeply human and relational capacity.

From the very beginning of life, our development takes place in relationship with others. Voice. Gaze. Touch. Rhythm. Breathing. Facial expression. Presence. All of these can participate, in different ways, in the experience of being with another person. Perhaps one of the most important ideas in this article is this: Regulation is not only an individual process. It can also be a relational process. This changes the way we understand stress, anxiety, emotional recovery, and nervous system regulation. Many people believe they should be able to regulate themselves completely on their own. And when they need support, they conclude that they are weak. Biology tells a different story. We are a deeply social species. The human brain develops within relationships and social contexts, and throughout much of life we continue to depend on relationships to learn, adapt, receive support, and recover stability after difficult experiences. Not because we are meant to depend permanently on others. But because many of our capacities develop within relationship. Here we encounter a contemporary paradox. We have never talked so much about self-care. And yet many people try to regulate a profoundly relational nervous system as though it were an entirely individual project. They breathe alone. Meditate alone. Exercise alone. Journal alone. And all of these things can be valuable. But sometimes we forget something fundamental. A safe conversation, a calm presence, a respectful relationship, or someone simply staying nearby can also become an important resource when we are moving through something difficult. Co-regulation does not mean that another person solves our inner world. It means that the human organism can find support in another person's presence while gradually developing greater capacity for self-regulation. These are not opposing processes.

They can nourish one another. Throughout this article, we will explore what science tells us about co- regulation, how relationships participate in emotional and physiological regulation, why certain relational experiences can support a greater sense of safety, and what we can do in everyday life to participate more consciously in this silent exchange that takes place between bodies, voices, rhythms, gazes, and presence. Because perhaps one of the most important questions is not only: How can I regulate myself? Perhaps it is also: With whom does my nervous system learn what safety feels like? That question has the power to change the way we understand love, friendship, family, therapy, and everyday life. Because some people don't simply accompany us. Some people's presence reminds the body that safety can also be shared. What Science Tells Us The Human Nervous System Develops and Regulates in Relationship There is an experiment, in a sense, that has been taking place for millions of years. A baby cries. An adult picks them up. Breathing changes. Heart rate may change. Muscle tone changes. Facial expression changes. Attention reorganizes. What we are witnessing is more than comfort. We are witnessing an early form of interpersonal regulation. For a long time, regulation was understood primarily as an individual task. Today we know that human development takes place within relational systems and that interactions with other people can profoundly influence how we learn to respond to stress and organize our emotions. Developmental psychology, attachment research, and social neuroscience have each contributed different perspectives to understanding these processes. Voice. Gaze. Facial expression. The rhythm of conversation. Touch.

Proximity. Emotional availability. All of these can become part of an ongoing process of adjustment between people. This does not mean that there is one single mechanism called "co-regulation" that explains every human interaction. Nor does it mean that one person can simply "regulate" another as though they were flipping a switch. Reality is much more complex. But we do know that human beings are sensitive to the states and behaviors of other people. We perceive social signals. We respond to them. We adjust our behavior. And our relational experiences can influence how we experience stress, safety, connection, and recovery. This begins very early. A newborn has limited capacities for organizing intense states of activation independently. They need care. They need contact. They need nourishment. They need protection. They need a sufficiently predictable environment. Over time, they progressively acquire greater capacities to regulate their internal states. But those capacities do not appear out of nowhere. They develop within a relational context. This is why attachment is so important. The work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, among many researchers who followed them, helped demonstrate that the availability and sensitivity of caregivers participate in the development of children's expectations about relationships, safety, and responses to stress. This does not mean that a particular childhood determines our nervous system forever. Human development remains capable of change. Later relationships matter too. Experience can transform us. And our capacity to learn continues throughout life. Co-regulation does not end in childhood. It continues. When we talk with someone who truly listens. When we walk beside someone with whom we feel safe.

When we share silence. When we laugh. When we cry in someone's presence. When someone remains close during a difficult experience. When we feel that we don't have to explain every part of what we are experiencing in order to be understood. Our nervous systems do not function in isolation. We are continually receiving information from our social environment. Some of that information may contribute to a sense of safety. Some may increase vigilance. And some may simply help us orient. Research on physiological synchrony has also found that certain social interactions can involve patterns of coordination between aspects of two people's physiological activity. Researchers have studied relationships between breathing, heart rate, autonomic activity, and other physiological indicators during close interactions. But it is important to be precise here. The existence of physiological synchrony does not mean that two people literally "merge" their nervous systems. Nor does it mean that all synchrony is positive or that synchrony always represents safety. Synchrony can depend on context, relationship, task, and many other factors. The truly interesting point is much simpler: bodies influence one another. Human presence has physiological consequences. This becomes particularly important in an era in which we talk constantly about connection. We are digitally connected to hundreds or thousands of people. We can send messages instantly. Share photographs. Hear voices. See faces. And yet many people experience a profound sense of isolation. Connectivity and encounter are not exactly the same thing. We can exchange information for hours without necessarily experiencing a deep sense of connection. Because co-regulation takes place within a larger context. Presence. Attention. Reciprocity. Sufficient safety. The possibility of responding. The possibility of stepping away.

The possibility of being seen without feeling invaded. Here we encounter an idea that feels deeply important. Co-regulation is not simply about calming someone down. It is about participating in a relationship in which the nervous system may have opportunities to recover flexibility. A good conversation does not necessarily eliminate the problem. But it may restore resources for facing it. A respectful gaze does not change the past. But it can change the state from which we remember that past. A stable presence does not heal every wound. But it can offer a different experience of being accompanied. And that experience matters. Because the nervous system learns through experience. We learn what to expect. We learn which signals deserve attention. We learn when to approach. When to protect ourselves. When to rest. When to explore. And we also learn that we do not always have to do everything alone. Perhaps this is one reason prolonged social isolation can have significant consequences for physical and psychological well-being. We don't simply miss company. We miss relationship. We miss support. We miss the possibility of sharing states, experiences, and resources with other human beings. Sometimes we need someone to help us remember a rhythm that is difficult to find on our own. Science continues to investigate the mechanisms of co-regulation, attachment, interpersonal synchrony, and the influence of relationships on physiology. But one conclusion is becoming increasingly clear: the human capacity for self-regulation develops within a deeply relational world. We were not made to live in complete isolation. We were made to learn, grow, adapt, and recover in relationship as well. And perhaps that is one of the most important messages of our time. In an era obsessed with self-sufficiency, biology continues to remind us that human connection can also be part of the conditions that support our health. Practice Transforms

How to Participate Consciously in Shared Regulation There is an idea that can bring a great deal of relief. Co-regulation does not require perfection. We do not need to become permanently calm people in order to positively influence a relationship. We do not always need to know what to say. We do not need to have an answer for everything. In fact, one of the most valuable aspects of a regulating relationship may be something much simpler: authenticity. A real human being. Present. Available. Able to listen. Able to recognize their own limits. Able to say: "I don't know what to say, but I'm here." Co-regulation is happening all the time. The question is whether we participate in it consciously or unconsciously. At Sentido Somático, one idea feels particularly important: We cannot control another person's nervous system. But we can create relational conditions that support a greater sense of safety, autonomy, and orientation. And that profoundly changes the way we relate to one another. These are some of the most important ways we can participate in shared regulation. Listening Without Rushing to Fix When someone is suffering, we often feel the impulse to give advice. Explain. Interpret. Correct. Find a solution. But we do not always need to do something. Sometimes we need to stay. The person may first need to experience that they do not have to move through that moment entirely alone. Listening means offering presence before solutions. You can ask: "Do you want me to listen, or would you like us to think together about what to do?" It is a small question. But it gives something essential back:

autonomy. We don't assume what the other person needs. We ask. And that difference can transform a conversation. Regulating the Pace of Conversation Rhythm communicates too. Speaking too quickly. Constantly interrupting. Changing the subject abruptly. Answering before the other person has finished. All of these can make genuine contact more difficult. Pauses, on the other hand, give a person time to feel, think, and respond. A regulating conversation is not necessarily a slow conversation. It is a conversation in which the body has time to participate. Sometimes a pause of a few seconds offers much more than a five-minute explanation. The Gaze That Helps Us Orient The human gaze has enormous importance in social communication. But not every kind of gaze communicates the same thing. Looking at someone in order to evaluate them is not the same as looking at them in order to accompany them. A worried gaze is not the same as an available gaze. Watching someone to find what they are doing wrong is not the same as meeting them with curiosity. A kind gaze can communicate: "I'm here." Visual orientation also helps us evaluate context. That is why, during a difficult conversation, it can be helpful to allow eye contact without turning it into a demand. Look. Look away. Return. Leave space. Safety does not need to be intense. Often, it needs to be sufficiently consistent. Breathing That Does Not Impose Sometimes we try to regulate someone by telling them: "Breathe." "Relax." "Take a deep breath." And often this can increase a person's sense of failure.

They are already trying to be okay. They don't need another task. Co-regulation offers another possibility. We breathe ourselves. Not to demonstrate how the other person should breathe. Not to turn our breathing into a tool of control. Simply to remain in our own body. A comfortable, spontaneous, unforced breath may contribute to making our presence different. It is not a guarantee. It is an invitation. Respecting No Perhaps one of the most regulating acts is respecting a boundary. Accepting that someone does not want to talk. Doesn't want a hug. Doesn't want advice. Doesn't want company at that moment. Doesn't want to close their eyes. Doesn't want to be touched. Autonomy is part of safety. Because when we can say "no" without losing the relationship, the body receives very different information. "My perception matters." "I can set boundaries." "I can remain connected without disappearing inside the relationship." This is particularly important when we speak about trauma and experiences of vulnerability. We do not need to invade in order to accompany. Presence can coexist with respect for autonomy. Co-Regulation Does Not Mean Carrying Someone Else Here we encounter a distinction I consider essential. Co-regulation does not mean absorbing other people's emotions. It means maintaining enough contact without losing our own center. Many people confuse accompanying with carrying. Listening with fixing. Loving with saving. Understanding with taking responsibility. The result is often exhaustion. One person becomes dysregulated and the other feels responsible for immediately making it better. The first person becomes increasingly dependent on the second.

The second becomes exhausted. And neither truly learns how to orient themselves. Healthy co-regulation needs two people who remain present. Not one person who disappears in order to completely hold the other. This is why self-care and co-regulation are not opposites. They need one another. Only a system that retains some capacity for stability can offer a quality presence. This does not mean that we need to be perfectly regulated before entering relationships. That would be impossible. It means we can learn to recognize our own limits. I can accompany you without fixing you. I can listen to you without absorbing you. I can love you without becoming responsible for everything you feel. I can be with you without abandoning myself. This is a much more mature way of understanding relational regulation. Co-Regulation Also Begins Within Ourselves There is a question I love: What does it feel like to be with yourself when you are truly with yourself? Because the way we treat ourselves deeply influences the way we can relate to others. Someone who never allows themselves to rest may have difficulty recognizing rest as a legitimate need. Someone who is constantly at war with their body may find acceptance difficult to offer. Someone who has never felt listened to may first need to learn what listening feels like. This is not a condemnation. It is an invitation. Self-regulation also develops through our relationship with ourselves. And perhaps one of the deepest tasks of somatic work is to build an internal relationship that is kind enough for us to remain present with our experiences without immediately needing to fight them. This does not mean approving of everything we feel. It means being able to stay present. I can feel fear. I can feel sadness. I can feel anger. I can feel confusion. And I can still remain with myself.

This capacity also transforms our relationships. Because when we stop demanding that we disappear every time something becomes uncomfortable, we begin to offer something different to others. We don't need them to stop feeling. We can accompany them while they feel. Becoming Contexts of Safety Here we arrive at a concept I would like to keep for the book. Becoming contexts of safety. Not saviors. Not everyone's therapists. Not people who never feel fear or sadness. But human beings whose presence makes it a little easier for another person to remember their own resources. The difference is enormous. We don't lend someone our strength. We help create conditions in which they can find their own. Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful forms of mature love. Not solving another person's life. Offering a presence in which their nervous system can recover enough orientation to continue walking on its own. This also means knowing when professional support is needed. Everyday co-regulation can be deeply valuable, but it does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic care when someone needs specialized treatment. Not everything can be resolved within a relationship. Recognizing that boundary is also an act of care. Exploring This Idea Co-Regulation as a Form of Belonging There is a question that quietly runs through the whole human experience. Where can I rest while being who I am? Sometimes we search for that answer in achievement. Recognition. Control. Productivity. Getting everything right. And yet many people discover that the deepest rest appears somewhere unexpected. In a relationship where they do not have to constantly defend themselves. Co-regulation reminds us of something extraordinarily simple and extraordinarily easy to forget:

the human nervous system did not evolve in isolation. It evolved within communities. Around fires. In groups. Within families. Within networks of care. Within relationships where survival depended, to a significant degree, on the ability to coordinate, protect, care for, and orient one another. This does not mean idealizing human relationships. Relationships can also hurt us deeply. They can generate fear. They can create stress. They can become places of threat. Precisely because of this, experiences of safety matter so much. They offer the organism another possibility. The possibility that relationship does not have to be a constant source of vigilance and can also become a source of support, exploration, and recovery. At Sentido Somático, we have spoken about body literacy, inner landscapes, orientation, re-ritualizing our rhythms, and restoring while we live. Co-regulation brings many of these ideas together. Because it reminds us that the body does not organize itself only from within. It also organizes itself in relationship. I would like to propose a concept that feels especially important for the book: the relational ecology of the nervous system. Just as an ecosystem influences the health of a forest, our relationships form part of the environment in which our nervous system lives. The conversations we have. The rhythms we share. The quality of listening. The possibility of asking for help. The way we resolve conflict. The presence or absence of support. The possibility of setting boundaries. The experience of being respected. All of these form part of our relational environment. We are not isolated organisms that occasionally enter relationships. We are relational organisms who also need moments of solitude. This shift in perspective changes many things. It changes the way we understand stress. Anxiety. Emotional recovery. And it also changes the way we understand love. Because love, from a human and relational perspective, is not only a feeling.

It can also be a context in which the nervous system finds opportunities to develop trust, flexibility, exploration, and vitality. There is something that moves me deeply. Many people remember difficult moments in their lives and say: "I don't know how I got through it." When they explore the memory more slowly, they often discover that someone was there. Someone who called. Who listened. Who waited. Who believed. Who stayed. Sometimes that person did not say anything extraordinary. They had no solution. They could not change the circumstances. They simply stayed. And the memory of that presence can remain for years. This tells us something important. Meaningful relational experiences can become part of our emotional and bodily history. Over time, something we once received from others can become part of our own internal resources. Healthy co-regulation does not necessarily make us dependent. Under healthy conditions, it can contribute to developing greater resources for relating to ourselves and to other people. We learn: "I can ask for help." "I can receive support." "I can set boundaries." "I can be with someone without losing myself." "I can accompany without saving." "I can be alone without feeling completely alone." Perhaps that is relational maturity. Not needing anyone. Nor always needing someone. But being able to move flexibly between autonomy, connection, support, and solitude. Science will continue investigating physiological synchrony, attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, emotional regulation, and the mechanisms through which relationships influence our physiology. We will probably understand these interactions much better in the years to come. But perhaps we already know something essential.

Belonging is not only a social concept. It is also a bodily experience. At the beginning of this article, we said that some people change our nervous system when they enter a room. Now we can say something more. We also influence the bodily experience of others. Through our presence. Through our absence. Through our listening. Through our hurry. Through our ability to stay. Through the way we respect a boundary. Through the way we look. Through the space we leave. This responsibility does not need to become guilt. It can become care. Because every relationship is an opportunity to participate in the relational ecology of another human being. And perhaps one of the most important questions is not only: How can I regulate my nervous system? Perhaps it is also: What kind of presence do I want to offer the world? A presence that increases threat. Or a presence that expands the possibility of orientation, rest, and life. Perhaps co-regulation is one of the deepest ways of remembering who we are. Not separate individuals trying to survive beside one another. But organisms that, from the beginning of life, learned to find protection, meaning, connection, and hope within human encounter. And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful definitions of health. Not the absence of vulnerability. Not the absence of fear. Not the ability to always be okay. But the possibility of having relationships in which we can be vulnerable without having to defend ourselves all the time. Relationships where we can say no. Where we can ask for help. Where we can rest. Where we can be seen without being invaded. Where we can step away without being punished. Where we can return. Because, in the end, regulating ourselves is also a form of belonging.

And belonging, when it is sufficiently safe, can become one of the deepest experiences known to the human nervous system.
