CO-REGULATION: WHY WE NEED EACH OTHER No Nervous System Develops Completely Alone For a moment, imagine a newborn. Their breathing is still developing. Their body temperature depends, to a great extent, on contact with those who care for them. They need help to eat. Their movements are only beginning to organize. And their nervous system is developing at an extraordinary pace. During this period, much of their regulation happens in relationship with another person. The warmth of someone's arms. A familiar voice. The shared rhythm of breathing. A gaze. Gentle rocking. Being fed. Skin-to-skin contact. All of these experiences participate in the organization of a developing organism. Biology reminds us of something deeply important. We begin life regulating alongside others. A Deeply Social Nervous System For a long time, we imagined the brain as an isolated organ, devoted primarily to processing information. Today we know that this picture is incomplete. Much of the nervous system has evolved precisely for life in relationship. We perceive facial expressions. We recognize tones of voice. We adjust our movements to those of others. We share attention. We learn by observing. We become calmer in the presence of people who convey safety. And we also respond when we perceive threat, conflict, or isolation. All of this is part of the biology of a deeply social species. We do not simply live surrounded by other people. Our nervous system evolved expecting relationships to be there.
What Do We Mean by Co-Regulation? In recent years, the term co-regulation has become increasingly common. Simply put, we can understand co-regulation as the process through which another person's presence, behavior, and responses influence our physiological, emotional, and behavioral regulation. This does not mean that another person "controls" our nervous system. Nor does it mean that we permanently depend on others in order to feel well. It means something much simpler and, at the same time, deeply human. Living organisms influence one another. From the earliest months of life, we learn to organize some of our responses in relationship with the people around us. And this capacity continues to accompany us throughout life. Self-Regulation Also Begins in Relationship We often speak about self-regulation as though it were an entirely individual skill. Yet research into early development reveals something much more interesting. The capacity to regulate ourselves with increasing autonomy often develops precisely through thousands of earlier experiences of shared regulation. A baby does not learn to calm down because someone explains how to do it. They learn, little by little, through countless experiences in which another person responds to their needs with sufficient sensitivity and consistency. Over time, many of these experiences become integrated. And the organism begins to develop resources of its own. From a developmental perspective, then, self-regulation and co-regulation are not opposing processes. One grows through the support of the other. Needing Others Is Also Biology Many contemporary cultures place enormous value on independence. And, undoubtedly, developing autonomy is important. But autonomy does not mean no longer needing other people. It means being able to relate to them with greater freedom. Scientific evidence shows that high-quality human relationships are associated with multiple aspects of physical and mental health throughout life. Not because relationships eliminate every difficulty. But because, even in adulthood, human beings remain deeply relational organisms. Perhaps that is why, when we go through difficult moments, we look for a familiar voice. A conversation. A hug.
A calm presence. Not necessarily because we expect someone to solve our lives. Sometimes it is enough not to feel that we have to carry everything entirely on our own. And perhaps recognizing that need is not a sign of weakness. Perhaps it is one of the most natural expressions of our biology. Because the nervous system did not evolve only to survive. It also evolved to do so alongside others. EXPERIENCE GIVES MEANING You may have lived through moments like these without ever stopping to give them a name. After a particularly difficult day, a friend calls to ask how you are. The conversation does not change what happened, but when you hang up, you notice that your breathing is a little calmer. A child stops crying when they feel the embrace of the person caring for them. Someone listens to you attentively, without rushing to offer advice, and you realize that your shoulders are no longer quite so tense. You walk beside someone you love. You barely speak. And yet, by the end of the walk, something inside you seems to have settled. Perhaps none of these people solved the problem you were facing. And yet, something changed. Maybe because the human nervous system does not learn only in isolation. It also finds support, rest, and new possibilities in relationship with others. Life Happens Between Encounters From the very beginning, human experience is deeply relational. Before we know the world for ourselves, we are already experiencing it in relationship with another human being. Our first experience of existence takes place in a body that grows, develops, and is supported within the body of another person. Long before we learn to speak, walk, or think about ourselves, we are already participating in a relationship. After birth, that experience continues to evolve. Hands hold us. A voice soothes us. A gaze meets ours. As the years pass, new relationships appear. Friendships. School. Community. The people we love. The people we lose.
The people who arrive unexpectedly. We might say that human life is also a journey through different forms of relationship. And within each of them, we continue learning something about ourselves and about others. Relationship Is Not Only Where Wounds Appear When we talk about relationships, our attention often turns immediately toward pain. Experiences of abandonment. Loss. Breakups. Conflict. All of these are part of the human story and deserve to be acknowledged with respect. And yet, reducing relationship to what has hurt us would tell only part of the story. Relationship is, before anything else, where life begins. Long before there are wounds, there is an organism growing through constant contact with another organism. Long before difficulties emerge, there are thousands of everyday moments of care, presence, nourishment, touch, and companionship that make development possible. Remembering this does not mean denying suffering. It means widening the view. Our relational history is also made of people who were there. Gestures that supported us. Encounters that helped us keep going. Moments when someone made the world feel a little more inhabitable. Presence Can Also Regulate Sometimes we think helping means finding the perfect words. Offering solutions. Solving problems. But many experiences of relief happen in a much simpler way. Someone stays. Listens. Shares the silence. Offers us a cup of tea. Walks beside us. Reminds us, through their presence, that we do not have to go through everything alone.
Research on social support shows that feeling accompanied can meaningfully influence how we cope with difficult experiences. It does not eliminate pain or erase what happened, but it can offer a safer context from which the organism can continue adapting. Perhaps that is why, during some of life's most important moments, we seek the company of others. Not necessarily because they have answers. Sometimes it is enough to know that someone remains close. Interdependence: A Mature Way of Relating We are often taught that growing up means no longer needing others. Biology invites us to consider another possibility. Perhaps maturity does not mean breaking every bond. Perhaps it means learning to build relationships where we can care for others and allow ourselves to be cared for, offer support and receive it, develop our own resources without forgetting that we still belong to a human community. Autonomy has an important place. It helps us make decisions, recognize our boundaries, and support ourselves through many moments of life. But autonomy does not flourish in opposition to relationship. It often flourishes because of it. Because learning to support ourselves also means having known, at some point, what it feels like to be supported. Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful paradoxes of our biology. The more deeply we understand that we need others, the more freely we may be able to relate to them. Not from dependence. Not from fear. But from the trust that human life has always been a shared experience. Not Every Relationship Regulates Us in the Same Way If human beings are deeply relational, it might seem that any relationship would support our wellbeing. Experience, and research, show us that reality is more complex. Not every relationship makes us feel safe. Not every presence conveys calm. Not every form of closeness feels like refuge. Our nervous system does not respond simply to the fact that we are accompanied. It also responds to the quality of the encounter. The way we are listened to. The respect with which our emotions are received.
The possibility of feeling seen without being judged. The consistency between words and actions. Predictability. Trust. All of these are part of the relational context the organism continually evaluates. The Body Also Learns from Relationships Throughout life, every encounter leaves small traces. Some last only a few minutes. Others remain for years. Not because the body stores memories in some mysterious way. But because the nervous system is continually learning from experience. When a relationship offers care, respect, and a sufficiently stable presence, the organism may expand its expectations of what it means to be with another person. When, by contrast, a relationship is marked by violence, unpredictability, or abandonment, the nervous system learns from that too. Not because it is mistaken. But because it is trying to adapt to the conditions it has known. From this perspective, many responses that may feel painful today can be understood less as personal flaws and more as attempts at protection that once made sense within a particular context. Understanding this does not remove suffering. But it can lessen the judgment with which so many people look at their own history. Trust Is Also Learned We often think of trust as a decision. Yet for the nervous system, trust is also an experience that is built over time. It does not appear overnight. It develops gradually through encounters in which the organism discovers that it can soften without losing awareness, express itself without being rejected, and move toward another person without losing its dignity. Trust does not mean believing that nothing difficult will ever happen. It means discovering that there are relationships in which we can continue to be ourselves. And that experience can become a deeply meaningful resource. Not because it erases the past. But because it expands the possibilities of the present. When a Relationship Offers a Place to Rest
Perhaps one of the most restorative experiences is not finding someone who has all the answers. Perhaps it is finding someone whose presence allows the body to stop carrying, even for a few moments, a burden it has been carrying alone for too long. Sometimes that place appears in a friendship. In a partnership. In a community. In therapy. In a teacher. In a family member. Even in brief encounters that remind us that there are still people capable of looking with respect and listening with genuine presence. We cannot choose every relationship we will encounter throughout life. But we can gradually develop a greater sensitivity to recognizing which relationships support our growth and which ones pull us away from it. Perhaps that is one of the more mature expressions of co-regulation. **Not seeking just any company. But learning to recognize the relationships in which our bodies find conditions to breathe with a little more ease.** Because regulation does not happen only within the organism. It also happens between organisms that, with care, respect, and presence, learn how to meet. And perhaps that is one of the deepest forms of belonging. Not feeling that we have to change in order to be accepted. But discovering relationships where we can continue to grow without ceasing to be who we are. RESEARCH CONTINUES Over the past several decades, research into human development has profoundly transformed our understanding of relationships. Today we know much more about how relationships influence nervous system development, physical health, psychological wellbeing, and our capacity to navigate life's difficulties. Attachment theory, developmental neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, social neuroscience, and research on social support have approached this question from different perspectives, revealing an idea that appears consistently. **Human beings do not develop outside of relationships. We develop within them.** At the same time, science continues to ask questions. How do early experiences interact with the relationships we build in adulthood? What characteristics make some relationships particularly supportive of the development of trust?
How do culture, community, and social context participate in nervous system regulation? In what ways can positive relational experiences expand our capacity to adapt throughout life? Each of these questions continues to be investigated. And that is good news. Because it means we are still discovering new ways of understanding the extraordinary complexity of human experience. A Story That Continues to Be Written Perhaps one of the most hopeful ideas offered by contemporary research is this. Although our earliest relationships matter enormously, they are not the only relationships that will shape our lives. The nervous system continues to learn. It continues to adapt. It continues to reorganize some of its responses in response to the experiences it encounters in the present. This does not mean everything becomes easy. Nor does it mean that the past stops influencing us. It simply means that human beings retain a remarkable capacity to continue growing through new encounters, new experiences, and new ways of relating. Every respectful relationship. Every friendship that offers support. Every community where we find a place. Every therapeutic process grounded in trust. Every relationship where we can express who we are without giving up our dignity. All of these can become part of the story the nervous system continues to write. Not to erase the earlier chapters. But to expand the story. An Invitation to See Relationship Differently Perhaps, when we reach the end of this chapter, we do not need to ask only how we relate to others. Maybe we can also ask: What kind of presence do I want to offer the people who are part of my life? Because co-regulation is not only about what we receive. It is also about what we offer. Every conversation in which we listen with attention. Every gesture of care. Every embrace offered with respect.
Every moment when we remain beside someone without immediately trying to solve their pain. All of these are part of the immense web of encounters that sustains human life. We will not always be the right person to accompany every experience. And we cannot meet every need of the people we love. But we can remember something deeply simple. The way we are with others also becomes part of the world we help create. Perhaps that is why relationship carries such a beautiful responsibility. Not because we are meant to save anyone. But because all of us participate, in one way or another, in the human experience of meeting one another. BELONGING Throughout this chapter, we have spoken about biology. Development. Attachment. Neuroscience. But perhaps all of it can be gathered into one deeply human word. Belonging. Not as an obligation to fit in. Nor as the need to give up who we are in order to be accepted. But as the experience of discovering that there is a place where our presence can be received with respect. Where we do not have to hide our vulnerability in order to preserve our dignity. Where we can care for others and also allow ourselves to be cared for. Perhaps the nervous system has been learning the same lesson for millions of years. That life is not sustained through individual strength alone. It is also sustained through cooperation, care, and the relationships that make it possible for one generation to support the next. If this chapter has fulfilled its purpose, perhaps you will not finish it thinking only about co-regulation. Maybe you will remember something much older. That, from the very beginning of life, human experience has been deeply relational. Before we knew the world for ourselves, we were already experiencing it in relationship with another human being. And, in many ways, we continue to do so. Because growing does not mean leaving relationship behind. It means learning to build relationships where freedom, respect, and care can coexist. Perhaps that is one of the deepest forms of maturity.
