WHY DOES THE BODY REMAIN IN A STATE OF ALERT? There are people who live with a constant sense of tension. Not necessarily because something dangerous is happening every day. But because their nervous system seems unable to fully find a moment to rest. They sleep, but feel they never truly recover their energy. They notice themselves reacting to small sounds. They find it difficult to concentrate because part of their attention always remains focused on the environment. They startle easily. They experience a constant state of vigilance that is difficult to explain. Often, they find themselves asking: "Why does my body keep reacting this way if I know that I am safe now?" For a long time, these experiences were interpreted as signs of a body that was "too sensitive" or of an anxious personality. Today, neuroscience, stress physiology, and developmental psychology offer a much broader understanding. A nervous system that remains on alert is not failing. It is trying not to be surprised again. ALERTNESS IS A FORM OF ADAPTATION The ability to detect changes in our environment is one of the most important functions of the nervous system. Without it, survival would be impossible. Our nervous system is continuously evaluating signals coming from the body, the environment, and our relationships. Most of this process happens outside conscious awareness. We do not need to deliberately think about whether a sound deserves our attention or whether a facial expression communicates calm or tension. The nervous system makes these assessments extraordinarily quickly, organizing the body's response long before a conscious thought appears. When life experiences have taught us that the world is sufficiently safe, this vigilance can relax with relative ease. Attention can move flexibly. The body can alternate between moments of activation and rest. However, when the organism has experienced repeated, unpredictable, or prolonged threat, the learning can be different. Alertness stops being an occasional response. It can begin to become a habitual way of preparing for life.
We sometimes use the term hypervigilance to describe attention that remains persistently oriented toward possible signs of danger. But understanding this phenomenon does not mean assuming that every person experiencing hypervigilance has experienced trauma. A state of ongoing alertness can also be related to sustained stress, contexts of uncertainty, repeated experiences of insecurity, or other circumstances in life. Experience matters. WHEN DANGER BECOMES AN EXPECTATION One of the most important findings in contemporary research is that the nervous system does not respond only to what is happening. It also responds to what, based on its history of learning, it considers likely to happen. This is why a person may experience a dysregulated nervous system, live with chronic stress, experience anxiety and nervous system activation, or search for how to regulate the nervous system, without understanding why the body continues to react even in situations that are objectively safe. Not because the organism is confused. But because it learned that remaining alert increased the possibility of protection. Alertness does not always speak about the present. Often, it speaks about what the organism has learned to expect. When this vigilance continues for a long time, it can affect our ability to rest, concentrate, relate to others, or simply remain present with what is happening. Not necessarily because there is a current danger. But because the organism continues organizing itself around the possibility that something might happen. AN ORGANISM THAT IS STILL TRYING TO PROTECT LIFE Understanding this can profoundly change the way we look at the body. The question stops being: "What is wrong with me?" And begins to become another: "What did my organism learn that made staying alert feel like the best way to protect life?" This shift in perspective is especially important when we talk about complex trauma, childhood trauma, emotional regulation, chronic stress, or somatic therapy. Because the goal is not simply to eliminate alertness. It is to understand why it appeared.
Only from that understanding can we begin to offer the organism new experiences that allow it to discover that circumstances are different today. People do not remain on alert because they have chosen to live this way. They remain on alert because, at some point in their history, this way of organizing experience may have represented an extraordinary strategy for adapting. And precisely because it is a form of learning, it also retains the possibility of continuing to change. This is one of the most hopeful things contemporary science offers us. The organism is not condemned to endlessly repeat what it once learned. As long as there is life, there remains the possibility of learning new ways of meeting the world. EXPERIENCE GIVES MEANING Living in a state of alert does not always look the way we imagine it. It does not always mean consciously feeling afraid. It does not always involve living in an obviously dangerous situation. Very often, it expresses itself in much quieter ways. The need to always be doing something. Difficulty resting without feeling guilty. The feeling that nothing is ever enough. The inability to completely relax, even while on vacation. The need to repeatedly check whether everything is okay. The difficulty enjoying the present because part of the organism remains anticipating what might happen next. Many people describe this experience with a very simple sentence: "I feel like I can never let my guard down." And perhaps this is one of the most precise ways to describe an organism that has learned to live on alert. WHEN ALERTNESS BECOMES THE NORM One of the most complex aspects of chronic stress and a dysregulated nervous system is that, over time, a state of alert can stop feeling unusual. It begins to feel normal. Many people do not realize that they have lived for years with a high level of activation until, for the first time, they experience a few moments of genuine calm. Only then do they begin to understand how much effort their organism had been sustaining every day. This happens because the nervous system learns. And when a particular way of organizing experience remains in place for a long time, it stops feeling strange.
It becomes the reference point from which we interpret life. This is why some women come to believe that this is simply "who they are." That they were born nervous. That they have always been overly sensitive. That rest is simply not for them. And yet, many times, we are not observing a personality trait. We are observing a history of adaptation. It may mean that we are still learning to recognize rest as a sufficiently safe experience. WHEN REST ALSO REQUIRES A SENSE OF SAFETY Perhaps one of the least understood consequences of living in a constant state of alert is difficulty resting. Many people deeply want to stop. But when they finally have free time, they feel restless. They need to get up. Check their phone. Take care of something. Find something to do.

Because perhaps one of the greatest consequences of living in a prolonged state of alert is not simply exhaustion. It is forgetting what it feels like to live without it. And this is where one of the most beautiful aspects of accompaniment begins. Not convincing the organism to stop protecting itself. But helping it remember that rest is also possible. PRACTICE CREATES CHANGE When we understand why the organism remains in a state of alert, the way we approach practice also changes profoundly. For a long time, we have been taught that if we experience anxiety or a high level of activation, we need to find a technique that will help us "calm down" our nervous system quickly. Some practices can be deeply valuable. But there is a risk. Turning them into yet another attempt to control the body. At Sentido Somático, we propose a different path. We do not begin by asking how to make the organism stop being alert. We begin by asking what might help it feel a little safer. The difference may seem subtle. But it completely transforms the experience. SAFETY CANNOT BE FORCED
A sense of safety does not appear simply because someone tells us there is no danger. Nor does it emerge because we repeat an affirmation or convince ourselves rationally that everything is fine. Safety is an experience. And, like every experience, it needs to be lived. This is why, when we talk about nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, or emotional regulation, our interest is not limited to techniques. We are interested in creating experiences that the organism can recognize as sufficiently safe. A conversation in which we do not need to defend ourselves. A place where the body can feel supported. A breath that gradually becomes more spacious without being forced. A relationship in which we feel we do not constantly need to prove our worth. Small moments that, repeated over time, begin to change the way the nervous system interprets the present. We are not trying to manufacture an artificial feeling of safety. We are learning to recognize the signals of support that are already available and allowing the organism enough time to register them. LEARNING TO RECOGNIZE SAFETY We often talk about recognizing danger. Perhaps we have spent less time learning to recognize safety. And yet, this is also a capacity that can be cultivated. We can begin by asking ourselves: When during the day do I notice a little more spaciousness? With which people does my breathing change? Where do I notice that my body rests a little more? What activities awaken curiosity, play, or creativity? These questions are not intended to find an immediate solution. They are intended to expand the organism's capacity to orient toward what supports life. Little by little, the nervous system begins to register that not everything in the environment needs to be perceived through the lens of threat. There are also signals of support. Of care. Of presence. And the organism can learn from them. REST AS AN EXPRESSION OF SAFETY One of the deepest shifts happens when we stop thinking of rest as an obligation.
We do not rest because we are supposed to. We rest because the organism begins to recognize that it can. This is why we say that rest is also a signal. Not only a practice. When the body begins to rest more easily, it does not necessarily mean that life has become perfect. It may mean that the nervous system is beginning to discover that there are moments when it does not need to maintain the same level of vigilance. Today we understand much more about how the organism learns to respond to uncertainty, how early experiences influence the organization of alertness, and how the capacity for adaptation remains open throughout life. At the same time, science also invites us to maintain humility. We are still learning how biology, learning, relationships, social context, and subjective experience interact in shaping our sense of safety. Each new discovery reminds us that the human organism is far more complex than we imagined for many years. WHAT WE KNOW TODAY There is broad recognition that sustained alertness does not represent a failure of the organism. It often reflects a nervous system that has learned to remain prepared because, at some point in its history, that preparation increased the possibility of adaptation. We also know that this organization is not necessarily permanent. Neuroplasticity reminds us that learning continues throughout life.
Therefore, an organism that has learned to live on alert can also continue learning to recognize new experiences of safety. Not because we forget the past. But because the present continues to offer opportunities to reorganize our relationship with the world. REMEMBERING WHAT MATTERS Throughout this Library, we have returned again and again to the same idea. And it is worth remembering here. Rest is not a reward. It is a biological condition for continuing to live, learn, and regulate. But we have also discovered something equally important. When the organism begins to recognize safety, rest can arise more spontaneously. These two statements do not contradict each other. They complement one another. Rest supports regulation. And, at the same time, a greater sense of safety can make rest more accessible. It is an ongoing dialogue between the organism and experience. This is why, when accompanying someone living with chronic stress, with anxiety and nervous system activation, or with a dysregulated nervous system, we do not seek to impose calm. We seek to cultivate the conditions from which the organism can gradually discover that rest can also become possible. A DEEPLY HUMAN KIND OF HOPE Perhaps one of the greatest contributions of contemporary science is not only explaining how alertness develops. Perhaps it is reminding us that no learning is ever completely closed. As long as there is life, the organism continues to engage with the experiences it encounters. Every safe relationship. Every conversation in which we feel heard. Every moment in which we can breathe without rushing. Every space where the body discovers that it does not have to maintain vigilance all the time. And when that happens, rest, presence, regulation, and connection stop feeling like distant goals. They gradually become familiar experiences. And perhaps there is no more hopeful news than that.
