Movement as the Language of the Nervous System Long Before Words Long before we learned to speak, we were already moving. Before we understood the meaning of a word, the body was already seeking contact, orienting toward familiar faces, reaching out to explore the world, and responding to gravity through small, remarkably intelligent adjustments. Movement did not come after thought. Movement was there from the beginning. Even during prenatal life, the nervous system begins organizing patterns of movement that play an essential role in the development of the brain, muscles, joints, and sensory systems. From the earliest months of life, a baby does not explore the world only through the eyes. They explore it by moving. Every turn. Every attempt to reach for an object. Every rocking movement.
