Many people come to somatics because they want to stop demanding so much of themselves. And, without realizing it, they begin demanding that they regulate themselves perfectly. They want to feel calm all the time. To always sleep well. To breathe correctly. To respond calmly. Not to feel anxiety. Not to feel fear. Not to lose their balance. Nervous system regulation, which could become a source of greater freedom, ends up becoming another form of performance. And I find that deeply sad. Because the goal was never to turn ourselves into perfectly regulated human beings. The goal is to develop a more flexible, conscious, and compassionate relationship with our experience. In recent years, concepts such as the vagus nerve, trauma, co-regulation, the nervous system, breathing, and somatics have become widely discussed. This has had many positive aspects. More and more people understand that the body actively participates in emotional health and that well-being does not depend solely on willpower. But it has also created simplifications. Phrases circulating on social media. Quick explanations. Promises of immediate transformation. Techniques presented as universal solutions. And, little by little, nervous system regulation has become surrounded by a series of myths that can generate frustration, guilt, and confusion. I want to say something important from the beginning. A regulated nervous system is not a nervous system that never becomes activated.

It is a nervous system that can become activated when life requires it and recover its balance when conditions allow. Fear is normal. Sadness is normal. Anger is normal. Stress is part of life. Activation is not the enemy. Very often, it is an expression of adaptation. Throughout this book, we have explored flexibility, rhythm, movement, presence, creativity, and practice. All of these concepts point toward a very different understanding of regulation. Regulation is not a straight line. It is a capacity for reorganization. It does not mean eliminating emotions. It means developing resources for relating to them with greater spaciousness. It does not mean controlling the body. It means learning to listen to it. It does not mean becoming invulnerable. It means becoming more available to life. That is why this article is not intended to offer another new theory. It seeks to dismantle some ideas that, although they may seem useful, often take us away from the body's actual experience. Because one of the greatest risks in today's popular discourse is turning regulation into an unattainable ideal. And when regulation becomes an ideal, we stop listening to the organism and once again begin demanding that it be different from what it is. Contemporary science invites us toward a much more humble perspective. The nervous system is extraordinarily complex. It changes continuously. It learns. It adapts. It protects. It reorganizes. And no technique, no matter how valuable, can completely eliminate that complexity. Perhaps the first step toward genuine regulation is letting go of the fantasy that there is a perfect state we are supposed to reach. Because well-being does not come from controlling every experience. It comes from developing the capacity to inhabit experience with greater flexibility, presence, and trust. And to do that, we need to begin by freeing nervous system regulation from the myths that have turned it, for many people, into another form of perfectionism.

Science Explains Regulation Is Not a Perfect State — It Is a Capacity for Adaptation There is an idea that appears constantly on social media, in courses, and in conversations about well-being. "I need to regulate my nervous system." The phrase sounds correct. But it often hides a very limited understanding of what regulation actually means. Contemporary neuroscience and physiology describe the nervous system as a dynamic system, not as a switch that can remain permanently on or off. The organism changes continuously. It activates. It settles. It explores. It protects itself. It rests. It mobilizes. It reorganizes. Regulation does not mean remaining calm all the time. It means that the organism can adapt with sufficient flexibility to internal and external demands. I want to say something that feels fundamental. Activation is not the problem. The problem is often a loss of flexibility. Imagine someone walking through a forest. They hear an unexpected sound. Their attention increases. Their heart rate rises slightly. Their muscles prepare. That is regulation. The nervous system is responding to a possible demand from the environment. If the person discovers that the sound was only the wind, the organism gradually returns toward balance. Difficulty arises when activation remains persistent, when the organism has trouble reorganizing, or when it becomes caught in defensive patterns that reduce its possibilities for responding. Here we encounter one of the most important misunderstandings. Many people believe that a regulated nervous system never experiences anxiety, fear, or sadness. Scientific evidence tells us otherwise.

Emotions are part of healthy organismic functioning. Fear protects. Sadness helps us reorganize after loss. Anger mobilizes energy. Joy strengthens connection and exploration. A healthy nervous system needs to be capable of experiencing this entire repertoire. That is why regulation does not mean eliminating emotions. It means expanding our capacity to move through them without becoming completely overwhelmed by them. Research on resilience, neuroplasticity, and emotional regulation suggests that more adaptive people are not those who never become disorganized. They are those who can regain organization after becoming disorganized. This distinction is enormous. Because it completely transforms the goal. We are no longer seeking permanent calm. We are seeking a greater capacity for recovery. This connects deeply with something we have explored throughout Sentido Somático. The flexibility of the nervous system. Flexibility means being able to move between different states according to what life requires. Resting when possible. Activating when necessary. Seeking support when we need it. Exploring when there is enough safety. Setting boundaries when necessary. Changing strategies when one is no longer working. Rigidity is the opposite. Trying to respond in the same way every time. Here another important aspect appears. Regulation depends on context. There is no nervous system completely independent of its environment. Sleep matters. Nutrition matters. Relationships matter. Economic circumstances matter. Motherhood matters. Grief matters. Illness matters. Community matters. Nature matters.

Expecting someone to remain perfectly regulated regardless of their circumstances is unrealistic and, often, unfair. Science reminds us of something deeply human. We are relational organisms. Our nervous system developed in interaction with other human beings and with the environment. That is why co-regulation is not a luxury. It is an important part of our biology. There is another myth worth examining. The idea that there is one universal technique. Breathing. Meditating. Moving. Singing. Walking. All of these can be valuable. But no resource works in exactly the same way for every person or in every moment. The nervous system learns through experience. And every organism has a different history. What creates safety for one person may create discomfort for another. What helps today may not be enough tomorrow. Regulation is not a formula. It is a learning process. And here we arrive at an idea that feels essential to this book. Regulation is not a standard we must meet. It is a capacity we cultivate. We can develop it. Refine it. Expand it. But we cannot turn it into a permanent obligation. Because when regulation becomes another demand, the nervous system receives a paradoxical message. "You must be calm." And that command can increase precisely the tension we are trying to reduce. Perhaps the most important scientific understanding is this: The nervous system does not need us to demand perfection from it. It needs conditions in which it can learn. And learning requires time. Relationship. Experience. Movement. Rest.

Curiosity. And an enormous amount of patience. Because regulation is not the destination of a perfect organism. It is the path of a living organism that continues learning how to adapt. Experience Gives It Meaning True Regulation Resembles Freedom More Than Control There is a question I am asked very often. "How do I know if I am regulated yet?" And, honestly, I think the question comes from a very understandable confusion. We imagine regulation as a place we will eventually reach. A stable state. Permanent calm. A sense of control. As though there were a version of ourselves that no longer felt fear, anxiety, sadness, anger, or uncertainty. Over time, I discovered that the actual experience is very different. People who have developed a greater capacity for regulation do not necessarily feel less. They often feel more. But they relate differently to what they feel. That difference profoundly changes the path. I want to say something I consider very important. Regulation does not make us less human. It allows us to inhabit our humanity with greater spaciousness. We still have difficult days. We still lose people. We still get sick. We still experience conflict. We still feel fear when something important is at stake. The difference is that we no longer need to interpret every emotion as evidence that we are failing. This feels especially important because many people begin a somatic process with a silent expectation. They think that if they do enough breathing, enough movement, enough meditation, or enough bodywork, they will never feel overwhelmed again. When another crisis appears, they believe they have lost all their progress. And that is where guilt often appears. "I have gone backward." "I didn't do enough." "My nervous system is still broken." I want to offer another possibility.

What if progress did not mean never becoming dysregulated again? What if it meant how we meet ourselves when dysregulation appears? That question completely changes the experience. Because it shifts the focus from the state to the relationship. True regulation resembles a conversation. When an intense emotion appears, one part of us may say: "This is a lot." "I need support." "I need to rest." "I need to move." "I need to cry." "I need time." That conversation is already a form of regulation. Not because the emotion disappears. But because a relationship appears. Here presence becomes fundamental again. Presence allows us to observe without abandoning ourselves. To feel without disappearing inside what we feel. And that capacity profoundly changes the experience of suffering. I want to share something I observe frequently. People with greater nervous system flexibility often recover more quickly from difficulties. Not because they are stronger. Because they have more pathways available. They know how to rest. They know how to ask for help. They know how to set boundaries. They know how to breathe. They know how to walk. They know how to wait. They know how to change strategies. They know how to return to the body. Regulation expands our repertoire. And expanding our repertoire creates freedom. That is why I like to think of regulation as resembling freedom more than control. Control tries to eliminate uncertainty. Freedom develops resources for meeting it. There is an image that stays with me. Imagine a tree during a storm. A completely rigid tree is more likely to break. A tree with enough flexibility can move with the wind. It does not control the storm. It responds to it.

That is regulation. Not the absence of storms. The capacity for movement. The capacity for reorganization. The capacity to remain alive after the wind. Here another important myth appears. The idea that a practice should always make us feel good. Sometimes a practice connects us with a sadness we have avoided for years. Sometimes it shows us the exhaustion we did not want to acknowledge. Sometimes it reveals a need for change. That does not necessarily mean the practice is failing. It may mean that the practice is creating enough safety for the organism to stop maintaining certain defenses in the same way. Regulation does not always feel pleasant. Sometimes it feels true. And the truth of the body can be deeply transformative. There is something especially beautiful about this. Over time, many people stop pursuing regulation. And begin trusting their capacity to return. That trust changes life. Because they no longer need to control every emotion. They know they have an inner home. A practice. A body. A relationship. A place they can return to when life becomes difficult. Perhaps that is true freedom. Not living without disorganization. Living with the knowledge that we can reorganize. And that reorganization does not happen because we force ourselves to be okay. It happens because we develop such a deep relationship with ourselves that even our most difficult moments no longer have to be places where we are alone. Regulation, then, stops being a goal. It becomes a form of companionship. And that companionship, patient and flexible, is one of the deepest expressions of well-being. I want to propose an idea that I would like to explore more deeply throughout this book. Physiological Trust Physiological trust is the experience of knowing that the organism has resources with which to respond, adapt, and reorganize. It does not mean that everything will turn out well. It does not mean that we will never again feel anxiety, fear, or sadness. It means that we stop interpreting every activation as evidence that we are broken. And begin recognizing it as part of the adaptive intelligence of a living organism. This idea profoundly changes our understanding of well-being. Because it shifts the focus from control toward trust. Control tries to guarantee that nothing will overwhelm us. Trust develops the capacity to meet what overwhelms us without completely losing our relationship with ourselves. There is something particularly important here. Regulation does not eliminate vulnerability. It makes vulnerability more habitable. We can move through grief with a more regulated nervous system. We can feel fear before an important decision. We can experience uncertainty during a life transition. The difference is that these experiences no longer completely define our identity. A relationship appears. And that relationship creates space. Science continues to investigate resilience, neuroplasticity, emotional regulation, and nervous system flexibility. We know that organisms change through experience. That relationships influence physiology. That movement influences perception. That rest supports the body's reorganization. That presence can expand our capacity to respond. But perhaps the most important lesson is much simpler.

The nervous system does not need us to turn it into another perfection project. It needs us to learn how to relate to it. I want to return to a sentence that appeared at the beginning of this article: Nervous system regulation has become so popular that it has also begun to be misunderstood. Now perhaps we can understand why. Because we confuse regulation with calm. Control with health. Absence of symptoms with well-being. Somatic understanding proposes something much more human. Health is not the absence of movement. It is the capacity to move. Health is not the absence of emotions. It is the capacity to move through them. Health is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the capacity to respond creatively to it. Perhaps that is why regulation has so much to do with flexibility. And flexibility has so much to do with life. What is alive changes. It adapts. It learns. It rests. It explores. It reorganizes. A healthy nervous system is not an immobile nervous system. It is a nervous system with enough flexibility to participate fully in the human experience. And this understanding has a profoundly liberating consequence. We can stop pursuing a perfect version of ourselves. We can stop measuring every day as a regulation exam. We can stop interpreting every intense emotion as failure. We can begin trusting that the organism knows much more about adaptation than we sometimes imagine. Perhaps that is the true maturity of this path. Discovering that well-being does not consist of controlling life. It consists of developing such a deep relationship with our body and nervous system that we can meet life —with all its beauty, uncertainty, and complexity— without having to abandon ourselves. Because, in the end, regulation is not the prize we receive when we do everything correctly. It is the way a living organism learns, again and again, to return to relationship.

And that return, more than a perfect state, is a quiet expression of trust in the life that continues moving within us.
