Nature as a Resource for Regulation The nervous system evolved looking at trees, not screens There is a question we rarely ask ourselves. What kind of world did the human nervous system evolve in? The answer is extraordinary. It did not evolve among buildings. It did not evolve under artificial light. It did not evolve listening to notifications. For hundreds of thousands of years, our eyes learned to orient by observing horizons, trees, water, fire, mountains, and the movement of other living beings. Our ears became finely attuned to wind, birds, rain, and footsteps on the ground. Our skin knew sunlight, shade, humidity, and the changing temperature of the day. Our balance developed while walking across uneven surfaces. And our attention was organized within landscapes that were open, complex, and profoundly alive. Perhaps this is why so many people feel something difficult to explain when they arrive at the sea, enter a forest, or look at a mountain. Their problems do not necessarily disappear. But something changes. The breath becomes fuller. The gaze softens. Time seems to move differently. And the body no longer feels completely trapped by urgency. For a long time, these experiences were considered primarily poetic or spiritual. Today, neuroscience, environmental psychology, medicine, and health sciences are investigating a fascinating possibility: nature can influence our experience of stress, attention, and well-being in measurable ways. Not as a universal cure. Not as a magical solution. But as a context to which the human organism appears to respond with remarkable sensitivity. This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. The brain did not evolve separately from its environment. It evolved in constant dialogue with it. Light participated in the organization of our circadian rhythms. Landscapes provided information about safety, resources, and possible threats.

Sounds helped us detect changes in our surroundings. Movement through territory organized balance, coordination, and orientation. In this sense, nature is not simply a backdrop. It is part of the body's history. And yet we live within a paradox. We have never had greater access to information. At the same time, many people spend entire days with very little direct contact with the elements that shaped our biology. We spend hours looking at short distances. Listening to artificial sounds. Walking on completely flat surfaces. Under controlled temperatures. With attention fragmented by constant stimulation. Somatic practice proposes a very simple question: What happens when the nervous system encounters an environment that offers a different kind of information? It is not about idealizing nature. Nature also contains danger, uncertainty, and challenge. A dark forest can evoke fear. A storm can activate the nervous system. An unfamiliar trail can demand attention. Nature is not a romantic ideal. It is a living environment. And that is precisely what makes it so interesting. It offers complexity without all of that complexity necessarily having to be interpreted as an emergency. Variability without constant fragmentation. Rhythm without haste. Here, an idea that feels especially important emerges. Nature does not act only upon the brain. The experience occurs throughout the organism. Light participates in the organization of circadian rhythms. Movement changes breathing and coordination. Temperature provides sensory information. Scents from plants activate sensory systems. Attention shifts. Posture shifts. Our perception of time may shift. It is a profoundly embodied experience. And yet many people describe something that goes beyond these changes. They speak of a sense of belonging. It is not simply feeling calmer.

It is feeling that one is part of something larger than one's immediate concern. Science can study some of nature's effects on stress, attention, cognition, and different indicators of well-being. But there is another dimension of the experience that does not need to become a variable in order to be meaningful. The experience of recognizing oneself within life. Perhaps this is why so many contemplative traditions chose forests, mountains, deserts, and rivers as places of practice. Not because they knew modern neuroscience. But because they understood that the environment profoundly influences the quality of our experience. Science is still investigating the precise mechanisms. There are many questions still open. And that is okay. A living science does not need to have every answer. But one intuition is becoming increasingly interesting: the human brain never evolved separately from the landscape. It has always been an expression of the dialogue between body and world. And perhaps that is one reason nature can have such a profound effect. It does not simply calm us. It may help us remember a rhythm larger than that of our immediate concern. And when the nervous system encounters that rhythm again, it may discover something extraordinary. We imagine the brain as a kind of computer enclosed inside the skull, processing information independently. Contemporary neuroscience offers a very different picture. The brain evolved in constant relationship with the environment. Light. Trees. Water. Wind. Animals. Changes in the seasons. Cycles of day and night.

All of these participated, over millions of years, in organizing human life. This means that our senses are not abstract tools. They were shaped by particular landscapes. Vision learned to orient across broad horizons. Hearing became capable of distinguishing natural sounds with remarkable precision. Balance developed through walking across uneven terrain. The skin responded to variations in temperature, humidity, and light. Attention evolved through an alternation between exploration and rest. Perhaps this is why natural environments can produce such particular effects in many people. Not because nature is a substance. But because it can offer a kind of information with which our organism has an evolutionarily ancient relationship. Over the past several decades, fields such as environmental psychology, chronobiology, neuroscience, and health sciences have investigated how natural environments relate to stress, attention, physical activity, sleep, and different dimensions of well-being. Reviews of the available evidence find promising patterns, while also emphasizing that results vary according to the type and duration of exposure, characteristics of the environment, and quality of the studies. One of the most influential researchers in this field was Roger Ulrich, whose pioneering work explored how the presence of natural elements could relate to recovery following medical procedures and to different stress-related indicators. Later, researchers such as Stephen Kaplan and Rachel Kaplan developed Attention Restoration Theory, proposing that certain natural environments may support a form of attention that is less demanding than the directed attention we use to solve problems, make decisions, or remain focused for long periods. The idea is fascinating. In cities, attention is often continuously captured by intense signals: traffic, screens, advertisements, conversations, noise, decisions, movement, alerts. Nature, by contrast, can invite a different kind of attention. Not distracted attention. More open attention. The movement of leaves. The sound of water.

Clouds. Birds. Changes in light. These are stimuli that can hold our interest without necessarily demanding an immediate response. The evidence surrounding attention restoration is not absolute, and reviews show diverse results. However, some studies and meta-analyses have found improvements in certain cognitive functions following exposure to natural environments, particularly in areas such as working memory and cognitive flexibility. From a somatic perspective, this is deeply significant. Orientation toward the environment finds an extraordinary ally in nature. When the gaze expands toward a horizon, when the ears perceive organic sounds, when the body walks on earth, stone, or sand, the organism receives information very different from that of a highly artificial, enclosed environment. This does not mean that every natural environment is automatically regulating. A dark forest can create fear. A storm can activate the nervous system. Nature does not necessarily calm us. It can help us remember a rhythm larger than our immediate state. And when the nervous system encounters that rhythm again, it may discover something extraordinary. That regulation does not always mean changing what we feel. Sometimes it means having enough space to orient again. Experience gives meaning Some problems change size when we walk among trees Perhaps this has happened to you. You have spent hours thinking about a difficult situation. Going over the same conversation. The same decision. The same fear. Everything feels urgent. Everything feels enormous. Then you go for a walk.

Not necessarily to solve anything. You simply walk. And after a while, you notice something strange. The problem still exists. But it no longer occupies the entire landscape. This experience is much more common than we tend to recognize. And it has an interesting explanation. When we remain for a long time in states of high demand or worry, our attention can narrow. The organism prioritizes what it considers relevant. The worry becomes the center. The threat becomes the center. Finding solutions becomes the center. This is an adaptive capacity. But when that orientation toward the problem continues for too long, our experience of the world can become smaller. Nature often offers the opposite. It expands the perceptual field. The horizon. Depth. Distance. The movement of light. Multiple sounds. Textures. Changes in temperature. The body receives a great deal of information that does not necessarily require an immediate response. And that spaciousness can change the experience. Not because the forest solves the conflict. But because the organism is no longer organizing all of its attention around a single point. Here is an idea that feels particularly important: nervous system regulation does not always mean eliminating a thought. Sometimes it means giving that thought context. Imagine a star. If you observe it through a very narrow tube, it seems to occupy the entire sky. If you lift your gaze, you discover that it is part of a constellation. Something similar can happen with our worries. Nature does not deny them. It repositions them. Many people describe a particular feeling after spending time beside the sea. They say they can breathe more easily.

Think more clearly. Cry. Be silent. Or simply stop fighting for a while. From a somatic perspective, this makes sense. The body stops orienting exclusively toward the problem and begins orienting toward the environment as well. The gaze moves. The ears explore. The feet feel the ground. Breathing responds to movement. Attention discovers new reference points. Orientation toward the environment happens naturally. And perhaps here we can understand something important about emotional recovery. We do not always need to find an immediate answer. Sometimes we need to recover enough space to perceive possibilities again. There is another experience that I find deeply revealing. When we walk through a forest, we rarely follow a perfectly straight line. The path curves. It rises. It descends. It narrows. It opens. The body must continuously adapt. And that adaptation is usually flexible rather than rigid. Perhaps nature reminds us of a truth we sometimes forget. Life does not move in a straight line. It moves through rhythms, curves, pauses, and transformations. In the city, we often try to solve life as if it were a mathematical problem. In nature, the body remembers that it is also a biological organism. And that difference can be profoundly meaningful. I want to be very careful here. I am not saying that taking a walk replaces medical care, psychological treatment, or somatic therapy when those are needed. Nor that spending time in a forest will automatically resolve anxiety, chronic stress, or traumatic experiences. The evidence does not support such broad claims. What I am saying is something simpler. Nature can become a context that supports certain capacities of the organism. The capacity to orient. To broaden attention.

To move. To perceive. To regain perspective. And sometimes to remember that we are larger than the internal state we are experiencing at this particular moment. There is an image that always moves me. A tree. No tree grows continuously. It has seasons. Times of expansion. Times of rest. Times when it loses leaves. Times when it blossoms. And yet it remains the same tree. Perhaps spending time in nature reminds us of something deeply embodied. That we too are organisms. That we have seasons. That we need rest. That we change. And that flexibility is not a failure of stability. It is an expression of life. Perhaps this is why so many people return from a forest, a mountain, or the sea saying something very simple: "I feel more like myself." Not necessarily because they have found all the answers. But because, for a moment, the nervous system stopped fighting to control every aspect of experience and was able to participate again in a larger rhythm. And perhaps that is one of the quietest forms of emotional recovery. Not escaping life. Remembering that we belong to it. And that sometimes a tree, a river, or a horizon can help the body remember something the mind had forgotten. Practice transforms Nature helps us remember how to orient There is a very simple practice that can profoundly change the experience of the body. Lift your gaze. It seems like an insignificant gesture. And yet many people spend most of their day looking at short distances: a screen, a steering wheel,

a table, a phone, a tense conversation, a repeated worry. Attention narrows. Vision narrows. And little by little, the experience of the body can narrow as well. When we enter a natural environment, something different happens. The gaze encounters depth. It can travel across a horizon. Follow the movement of branches. Watch the clouds. Perceive different layers of distance. Without realizing it, we begin to orient. At Sentido Somático, we often use the idea of inner landscapes. Sensations are landscapes. Breathing is a landscape in motion. Emotions change like weather. Thoughts appear and disappear like clouds. Interoception allows us to move through this territory. Nature offers an extraordinary mirror for understanding this experience. No forest remains exactly the same. No river repeats precisely the same movement. No sky keeps the same light. And yet there is continuity. There is change within an organization. Perhaps this is one of the deepest lessons nature offers the nervous system: landscapes can transform without ceasing to be landscapes. When a person learns to observe inner experience in this way, something may shift. Anxiety no longer necessarily feels like a permanent sentence. Sadness can be recognized as an experience that changes. Tension can stop being only an enemy that must be eliminated. They begin to be felt as phenomena that appear, intensify, diminish, and transform. Not because they are insignificant. But because they are part of a living territory. Here another idea becomes especially important for nervous system regulation. Orientation does not mean eliminating the inner landscape. It means knowing where we are. A hiker does not need to control the mountain. They need to recognize the trail, the weather, the light, and their own resources. Something similar happens in the body.

Somatic education can be understood as a way of learning cartography. Not to dominate the territory. But to inhabit it. Nature supports this learning because it constantly invites us to perceive relationships. Between light and shadow. Between sound and silence. Between movement and stillness. Between closeness and distance. The organism stops experiencing the world as a series of isolated stimuli and begins to perceive patterns. And this capacity to perceive relationships can become a resource for regulation. There is another experience many people describe. After spending time in nature, they return home feeling that they can hear their body more clearly. Not because the body has radically changed. But because attention has become quieter. Nature can, in this sense, offer a context that supports a broader and less fragmented kind of attention. An attention that does not capture. It accompanies. An attention that does not demand immediate results. It allows things to reveal themselves. This becomes particularly important in a culture where we often try to observe the body with the same logic we use to solve problems. We search for the cause. The technique. The solution. The result. Nature reminds us of another rhythm. The rhythm of patient observation. Of processes. Of cycles. That is why so many contemplative traditions walked. They did not only sit to meditate. They walked through forests. Mountains. Deserts. Coastlines. Movement in nature joins external orientation with interoception. The feet feel the ground. The eyes explore the environment.

Breathing responds to the terrain. And inner landscapes begin to dialogue with outer landscapes. Perhaps there is one of the deepest forms of emotional recovery. Not when every difficult landscape disappears. But when we are no longer completely lost inside them. Because a landscape can be intense. It can be dark. It can be uncertain. And still, it can be traveled. Orientation restores a possibility that prolonged stress can diminish. The possibility of moving. Of choosing. Of stopping. Of continuing. And perhaps this helps explain why nature can be so meaningful for so many people. Not because it gives them a finished map. But because it reminds them of a capacity the nervous system has always possessed. The capacity to orient. Both in the forest. And within the extraordinary inner landscape each of us carries. The most honest answer is that we do not fully know. Science can explain part of the phenomenon. Natural light participates in circadian rhythms. Contact with green spaces can also facilitate movement and other behaviors associated with health. All of these factors participate in the experience. It becomes part of a larger territory. This does not diminish its importance. It gives it perspective. Somatic education can be understood, in part, as the art of learning to move between landscapes. The inner landscapes of breathing, sensations, emotions, and thoughts. And the outer landscapes of light, wind, water, trees, and sky.

Both are in constant dialogue. And that dialogue can become a resource for regulation, presence, and well- being. At Sentido Somático, we do not understand nature as a technique. We understand it as a relationship. It is not about using the forest to obtain a particular result. It is about allowing the organism to encounter, even for a moment, an environment that expands its capacity for orientation, perception, and presence. Science will continue investigating the effects of nature on stress, anxiety, emotional recovery, attention, and well-being. We will undoubtedly understand the mechanisms better in the coming years. And perhaps we will discover that some of the effects we currently attribute to nature depend on a much more complex combination of factors: movement, natural light, time outdoors, physical activity, social interaction, reduced noise, change of context, attention, and a sense of connection. That does not make the experience less profound. It makes it more interesting. Because it reminds us that the organism does not live divided into independent pieces. It lives in relationship. With the body. With other people. With space. With light. With time. With the environment. With life. At the beginning of this article, we said that the nervous system evolved looking at trees, not screens. Perhaps now we can say something more. Nature does not return us to an idealized past. It returns us to a relationship. A relationship with a living world of which we are still a part. And when that relationship is restored, even for a moment, the body may recognize something very old. That safety does not always mean controlling the environment.

Sometimes it means discovering that we can orient ourselves within it. Because perhaps nature is not simply a place where we go looking for calm. Perhaps it is also a place where the organism remembers that it has never stopped being nature. And maybe that is one of the deepest forms of regulation. Not escaping the world. Not disconnecting from what we feel. Not turning the forest into yet another tool we must learn to use correctly. But allowing ourselves to be there. To look. To walk. To listen. To breathe. To feel. To orient. And to discover what happens when we stop asking the environment to give us an answer and simply allow it to become part of our experience again. Perhaps then something very simple appears. The horizon. The movement of the leaves. The temperature against the skin. The ground beneath the feet. The sound of a bird. The space between one tree and another. And, for a moment, the experience of not having to solve everything. Perhaps that is one of the most human forms of regulation. Not escaping life. And remember that long before we learned to live among buildings, schedules, and notifications, our organism already knew something about the world. It knew how to orient. It knew how to walk. It knew how to stop. It knew how to look. It knew how to listen. It knew how to rest beneath a tree. And perhaps it still knows. Not as a literal memory. Not as a formula. But as a deeply human capacity. The capacity to meet the world again. And perhaps discover, even for a moment, that we too belong to the landscape.
