Before we could even understand who we were. We were already doing something fundamental: orienting ourselves. A baby opens its eyes and begins to explore the space around it. A gaze. A sound. A face. A voice. A moving shadow. A change in light. Long before we can explain what we are perceiving, our organism is already receiving information about the world. Where am I? What is around me? What just changed? Is there something that needs my attention? Can I continue with what I was doing? These questions do not usually appear as conscious thoughts. They are part of a capacity much older than language. The capacity to orient. In simple terms, orientation means directing our attention toward what is happening around us so that we can gather relevant information. But even that definition does not fully capture the depth of the process. Because orienting is not only about finding a direction. It also means discovering the context we are in. Recognizing a space. Locating the source of a sound. Recognizing a familiar presence. Noticing a change in light. Detecting that something has moved. Distinguishing between what requires our attention and what can remain in the background. Our nervous system is designed to do this continuously. We do not need to give ourselves the instruction: "Now I am going to orient."

But it can also mean that our attention remains for a long time with events that are no longer happening. We can be sitting in a quiet room while our body continues responding to a conversation that happened hours ago. We can be in a physically safe place while our mind anticipates a difficult situation that will happen tomorrow. Orientation toward the environment does not ask us to deny any of this. It does not matter. Now allow your eyes to rest for a few moments on something that feels pleasant, interesting, or simply neutral. You do not need to think about it. Just perceive it. Then listen. There is no required number of seconds we need to spend orienting. The practice can be much more humble. Look. Listen.

Orienting does not only mean directing attention toward something. Space. Sound. Gaze. Contact. Not as separate elements. But as parts of one continuous experience. Orientation, Interoception, and Body Awareness We can also understand orientation in relationship to another fundamental capacity: interoception. Interoception broadly refers to the perception and processing of signals related to the body's internal state. Breathing. Heart rate. Visceral sensations. Internal temperature. Hunger. Satiety. Tension. Physiological changes.
Contemporary research considers interoception a complex and evolving field, exploring how attention to internal signals and the way we interpret them may influence experience and different processes of regulation. But noticing what happens inside does not mean stopping our perception of what happens outside. Both dimensions can coexist. We can feel our breathing while looking at a window. To distinguish between what we know and what we are still investigating. And to value a practice for what it genuinely offers, without needing to turn it into an extraordinary promise. An Invitation for Everyday Life You can practice orientation without turning it into a formal exercise. When you arrive somewhere new, look around before reaching for your phone. When you come home after a long day, allow your eyes to recognize the space. When you walk, notice how the landscape changes. When you hear an unexpected sound, notice what happens to your attention before constructing an explanation. When you are talking with someone, allow your perception to include the space you share. When you sit near a window, spend a few seconds noticing what is happening outside. You do not need to do anything special. Orientation is already happening. The practice is simply to participate consciously in it from time to time. You may discover something interesting. When you stop looking only at what worries you, the worry does not necessarily disappear.
But the world can become a little larger again. And that can matter. Because a difficult experience can occupy a great deal of space. But it is rarely the whole experience. There is almost always something else. A sound. A temperature. A surface. A light. A movement. A person. A breath. A tree. The sky. The ground. The room. The moment. A Question to Carry With You The next time you notice that your attention has become completely absorbed in something, perhaps you can ask yourself: What else is happening here? Not to escape what you are experiencing. Not to distract yourself. Not to force yourself to feel better. Simply to widen the field. Look around. Listen. Feel the support beneath you. Notice the space. Observe what has changed. And then, if you need to, return to whatever was holding your attention. Orientation does not require us to abandon. It requires us to be able to return. Perhaps that is one of its greatest gifts. The Environment Can Also Become a Source of Information Sometimes we think that regulating ourselves means learning to better control what happens inside us. But perhaps we can also learn to relate differently to what happens around us. We cannot completely control our environment. We cannot eliminate uncertainty. We cannot guarantee that nothing difficult will ever happen.
But we can learn to perceive. To discriminate. To update. To recognize when something has changed. And also when something remains. The morning light. The sound of a distant conversation. The texture of a wall. The weight of our body. The shadow of a tree. The space between two people. A surface beneath our feet. Not everything needs to be interpreted. Some things can simply be perceived. And perhaps that possibility—to perceive without having to solve—is one of the simplest ways to develop a different relationship with the present moment. Turning Toward Life Before we learned to think about ourselves, we were already learning how to find our place in the world. Before we had words for calm, we were already learning to recognize forms of support. Before we understood what safety meant, our organism was already learning to distinguish. Before we could explain our experiences, we were already looking. Listening. Exploring. Approaching. Moving away. Resting. Returning. Orientation belongs to a very old layer of our biology. But it remains a deeply human capacity. Because today we do not orient only to survive. We orient to learn. To relate. To discover. To move. To create. To find our place. To recognize someone. To know where we are. And perhaps also to remember that we are here.
We do not need to turn orientation into another obligation. We do not need to practice it perfectly. We can simply begin to notice that it already exists.
