Proprioception: How the Body Knows Where It Is A Sense We Rarely Notice As you read these words, you are probably not thinking about where your hands are. You don't need to look at your legs to know whether they are crossed or resting on the floor. You may not be aware of the angle of your shoulders, the position of your head, or the distance between your body and the screen. And yet, your body knows all of this right now. How is that possible? For a long time, we were taught that human beings have five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. That framework is useful as an introduction, but we now know that our perception of the world is much richer and more complex. Alongside these familiar senses, the nervous system has specialized systems that continuously gather information about what is happening both within and around the body. One of them is proprioception. Proprioception is the nervous system's ability to perceive the body's position, movement, and orientation without relying on vision. It allows us to walk without constantly looking at our feet, bring a cup to our mouth without watching every movement of our arm, or type on a keyboard while our attention remains on the screen. It may seem like a simple ability. In reality, it is one of the most extraordinary achievements of the nervous system. Every movement we make requires millions of signals to travel continuously between muscles, tendons, joints, the spinal cord, and the brain. As we take a step, lift a box, or embrace someone, the body is constantly receiving information about muscle length, tension, joint position, and the speed of movement. All of this information is integrated within fractions of a second. And most of the time, it happens without us having to think about it. The Body Also Perceives Itself There is a deeply rooted idea in our culture that we experience the world primarily through our eyes. Contemporary neuroscience offers us a much broader picture. The brain does not only receive information from the outside world. It also receives a continuous stream of information from the body itself.

In a sense, we could say that the body is constantly "listening" to itself. Proprioception is part of this silent dialogue. It does not primarily tell us how the body feels emotionally—that belongs mainly to another system we will explore later: interoception. Proprioception answers different questions: Where is my arm? Am I standing or sitting? How much force do I need to hold this object without dropping it? Where is my body moving? Through this capacity, we can move with precision, maintain balance, coordinate complex actions, and relate to the space we inhabit. Every time we walk down a staircase without looking at every step, or reach for a glass of water, proprioception is doing extraordinary work. And precisely because it usually works so effectively, we rarely notice it. A Constant Conversation Between the Body and the Brain Proprioception does not happen in a single place within the body. It is the result of a continuous conversation. Within our muscles are specialized receptors called muscle spindles, which detect changes in muscle length. Within our tendons are Golgi tendon organs, which provide information about the tension being placed on the muscles. Our joints and skin also contribute information about the body's position and movement. All of these signals travel toward the spinal cord and different regions of the brain, where they are integrated with information coming from other sensory systems. These systems do not work as isolated pieces. They collaborate continuously. Proprioception is in conversation with balance, vision, touch, and other systems that help us build a coherent perception of where we are and how we are moving through space. Today, we understand that this integration is dynamic and continuous. The brain does not wait until it has received every piece of information before responding. It continuously integrates, compares, anticipates, and updates its perception of the body as we move through the world. Much More Than Movement

It might seem that proprioception is mainly useful for walking or coordinating movement. Its importance, however, goes much further. Our sense of physical presence, the way we inhabit space, and even part of our sense of bodily stability depend on the proprioceptive information continuously reaching the nervous system. When this information changes—because of an injury, a neurological condition, or certain sensory alterations—our experience of our own body can change as well. And this brings us back to an idea that runs through the philosophy of Sentido Somático: We do not live separate from the body. We live through it. Our experience of the world begins long before words appear. It begins within a living body that, silently, has spent our entire life orienting, moving, and finding its place in space. We may never have stopped to think about this. And yet, every step we take is possible because of a perceptual system so extraordinary that it usually goes completely unnoticed. Perhaps that is one of the greatest wonders of the nervous system. It performs some of its most complex tasks so naturally that we only discover them when someone invites us, for the first time, to look with curiosity at what has been there all along. The Somatosensory System: Much More Than the Sense of Touch When we think about sensing, we often imagine contact with the world. The softness of fabric. The warmth of a cup between our hands. A breeze against the skin. Rain falling on the face. And yet, the nervous system uses the word sense in a much broader way. Sensing is not only about perceiving what happens outside of us. It also means perceiving what is happening within our own bodies. Between these two worlds is an extraordinary communication system known as the somatosensory system. Far from being a single sense, the somatosensory system integrates multiple forms of perception, allowing the body to build a dynamic representation of itself and its relationship with the environment. Through it, we know when something touches our skin, but we can also know where our hands are even with our eyes closed.

We perceive the texture of an object while simultaneously sensing the position of our legs as we walk. We feel the weight of a backpack on our shoulders and the pressure of our feet against the ground. All of this is part of the same dialogue. A Living Map of the Body We can imagine the somatosensory system as a map that the nervous system continuously updates. It is not a map drawn once and left unchanged. It is a living map. Every movement. Every change in posture. Every contact with another person. Every step we take. Every breath. All of it provides new information. The body is continuously, silently asking: Where am I? How am I? What is happening around me? These questions do not appear as thoughts. They are answered through millions of signals traveling constantly between receptors throughout the body, the spinal cord, and different regions of the brain. Most of this work happens without requiring our conscious attention. And precisely because of that, it often goes unnoticed. Three Ways of Sensing As research has advanced, we have come to understand bodily experience, in a simplified way, through three broad pathways of perception. The first is exteroception. It allows us to perceive the world around us. The temperature of the air. The sound of a voice. Light. A scent. The touch of another person's hand. It is one of the ways the body establishes a dialogue with its environment. The second is proprioception, which we have already begun exploring in this article.

It allows us to know where our body is, how it is moving, and what position it occupies in space—even when we are not looking at it. And the third is interoception. Perhaps one of the most fascinating capacities of the nervous system. Through interoception, we perceive signals arising from within the body: our breathing, heart rate, thirst, hunger, the need for rest, internal temperature, and many other sensations that form part of everyday life. In the chapters ahead, we will explore interoception in greater depth because it plays an important role in physiological regulation, body awareness, and emotional experience. For now, it is enough to recognize something simple: Our nervous system does not have only one way of sensing. It has multiple pathways that, when integrated, make possible the richness of human experience. Feeling Is Also a Way of Knowing We often associate knowledge exclusively with thinking. And yet, before we put words to an experience, the body has already begun to perceive it. Before we explain that a chair feels comfortable, the body has already sensed its support. Before we describe an embrace as warm, the skin, muscles, posture, and many other systems of the body have already participated in that experience. This does not mean that thinking is less important. It means that thought comes after a bodily dialogue that often goes unnoticed. Contemporary neuroscience describes this process as an ongoing integration of perception, movement, memory, emotion, and cognition. We do not experience the world only through the mind. We experience it through the whole body. Perhaps that is why, when we expand our capacity for body awareness, we do not simply discover new sensations. We also expand the way we understand our own experience. And that may be one of the greatest gifts of the somatosensory system. It reminds us that sensing is not the opposite of thinking. Sensing is a form of knowing. A deeply human way of meeting life before we even try to explain it. When We Lose Clarity of the Body If proprioception is working continuously, why are there moments when we feel disconnected from our bodies?

Perhaps you have experienced something similar. After several hours in front of a computer, you stand up and realize that your shoulders have been raised for much longer than you noticed. Or you finish an intense workday and only then become aware of the accumulated fatigue in your legs. Perhaps, after a difficult conversation, you realize that you have been holding your breath for several minutes. These experiences are surprisingly common. And they do not mean that the somatosensory system has stopped working. What often changes is the amount of attention we give to some of the information our body is continuously generating. Sensing Is Not the Same as Paying Attention Our nervous system receives an enormous amount of information every second. If we tried to remain fully conscious of every sensation occurring in the body at the same time, we would probably find it impossible to focus on anything else. So the brain continuously selects which information needs to come into the foreground of our awareness and which can remain in the background. As you read these words, for example, you may not have noticed the contact of your back with the chair until a few seconds ago. Not because the sensation was not there. But because your attention was somewhere else. When someone brings that sensation to your awareness, you may suddenly realize that it has been there all along. It simply was not at the center of your conscious experience. And this reminds us of something important: Perceiving and paying attention are not exactly the same thing. The Body Never Stops Speaking At Sentido Somático, we often use the expression "listen to the body." It is a beautiful metaphor. But it is also important to understand its limits. The body does not speak in words. It speaks through changes in pressure. Shifts in muscle tone. Changes in breathing. Sensations of temperature. Impulses to move. Rhythms. Pauses.

Tension. Rest. Balance. Most of the time, these "messages" are not trying to get our attention. They are simply part of the body's everyday functioning. Sometimes, however, certain sensations become more noticeable. Not necessarily because something is wrong. Sometimes because the body needs to reorganize. Sometimes because we have remained in the same posture for too long. Sometimes because an emotion has changed our breathing, muscle tone, or movement. And sometimes because circumstances are asking us to notice something that had remained quiet until then. Restoring the Dialogue Perhaps one of the greatest contributions of somatic education is not teaching us new sensations. It is helping us recognize sensations that have been there all along. It is not about creating a different experience. It is about expanding our capacity to perceive what the body is already experiencing. From this perspective, developing body awareness does not mean constantly monitoring the body. Nor does it mean analyzing every sensation in search of a hidden meaning. It means cultivating a closer relationship with information that has been accompanying us since the beginning of our lives. Little by little. With curiosity. Without rushing. Without demanding immediate answers. Because perception has its own rhythms. And, like any form of learning, it needs time to develop. Perhaps that is why many people describe something surprising when they begin paying kinder attention to their bodies: It does not feel like they are learning something completely new. It feels more like they are finally noticing something that had been there all along. Inhabiting the Body: Proprioception as a Foundation for Presence There are moments when we walk without thinking about every step.

We pick up a cup without consciously calculating how much force we need. We lean forward to embrace someone without planning the movement of every muscle. These actions seem simple. And yet, behind them is an extraordinarily complex process. Throughout our lives, the nervous system has learned to trust the information it receives from the body itself. That trust rarely becomes a conscious thought. It simply happens. And precisely because it is usually there, we rarely notice it. A Quiet Sense of "Being Here" Proprioception does more than support movement. It also participates in something much more difficult to describe with words: the sense of occupying a place in space. When we stand with our eyes closed, the body continues to know where our feet are, how our weight is distributed, and what small adjustments are needed to maintain balance. We do not need to think about it. The body is already doing it. Perhaps we could say that there is a form of presence that exists before thought. A deeply embodied presence. It does not depend on repeating a positive affirmation. Nor on mentally convincing ourselves that we are here. It emerges from an ongoing dialogue between the nervous system, movement, gravity, and the environment. Movement Is Also a Form of Knowing For centuries, Western thought gave reason a privileged place. As though understanding the world depended primarily on thinking about it. Contemporary neuroscience and movement sciences have expanded that perspective. We now understand that much of human learning emerges as we move, explore, touch, walk, and inhabit space. A baby does not learn where their hand ends because someone explains it. They discover it through movement. Reaching. Grasping objects. Rolling. Crawling. Falling.

Getting back up. The body learns by doing. A Presence That Can Be Cultivated Perhaps one of the most hopeful ideas in this chapter is this: Proprioception is not a fixed capacity. It can continue to develop. Not because the body was ever incomplete. But because learning never ends. Every time we walk with attention. Every time we explore a new movement. Every time we notice the contact of our feet with the ground. Every time we sense how our balance changes as we breathe. The nervous system continues refining that quiet dialogue with itself. From this perspective, somatic practices are not about creating a different body. They are about enriching the conversation that already exists between the body and its own experience. And perhaps this is one of the deepest contributions of somatic education: Not teaching us to feel something extraordinary. But helping us discover the extraordinary richness of what has been happening all along. Coming Back to the Body Is Also Coming Back to Experience At Sentido Somático, we often speak about "coming back to the body." Over time, we have discovered that this expression can be understood in many different ways. Coming back to the body does not mean abandoning thought. Nor does it mean living only through sensations. It means remembering that every human experience happens within a living body. A body that perceives before it interprets. That moves before it explains. That learns before it builds concepts. And that continues to accompany us, quietly, through every moment of our lives. Perhaps that is why developing body awareness does not always mean learning something completely new. Sometimes, it means recovering our capacity to be amazed by a biological intelligence that has been present from the very beginning. Not to control every movement. But to inhabit it with greater presence.

Because before we ever ask ourselves who we are, the body has already been answering a much simpler—and profoundly human—question: Where am I? And perhaps learning to listen to that question is also a way of beginning to find our way back to ourselves. The Research Continues Science is still exploring some fascinating questions. How does the brain construct the sense that this body is "my body"? How do proprioception, interoception, and exteroception come together to create a coherent experience of ourselves? How does that perception change throughout development, aging, or after certain injuries? What role does movement play in the way we learn, remember, and relate to the world? Every year, new research expands our understanding. And, as happens throughout the Sentido Somático Knowledge Center, every answer opens new questions. Far from being a limitation, this is one of the greatest strengths of science. Understanding that we are still learning allows us to approach knowledge with humility. And also with wonder. Because few things are as extraordinary as discovering that our bodies have been carrying out immensely complex processes our entire lives, without ever asking for recognition. While we walk. While we embrace. While we breathe. While we write. While we rest. There is a continuous dialogue between millions of cells that quietly makes our experience of being alive possible. Perhaps we will never understand every one of these processes. And perhaps we don't need to. Because the purpose of knowing the body is not simply to accumulate information. It is to develop a more conscious relationship with it. An Invitation to Keep Exploring

Perhaps, by the end of this chapter, you won't remember all the scientific names we have mentioned. And that is perfectly fine. Maybe the most important thing is not remembering exactly what proprioception means. Maybe what matters is that tomorrow, while walking to work, embracing someone you love, or simply pausing for a few seconds before beginning your day, a small question arises: How am I inhabiting my body right now? You do not need to find a perfect answer. You only need to allow the question to exist. Because some questions are not looking to solve a problem. They are looking to open a relationship. And sometimes, a single question can begin a dialogue that accompanies us throughout an entire lifetime What We Hope This Chapter Leaves You With If this chapter has fulfilled its purpose, we do not hope that you have simply learned another new concept. We hope for something different. That the next time you take a step, you remember that your body knows far more than it can usually explain in words. That the next time you feel the contact of your feet with the ground, you notice the quiet intelligence supporting every movement. That the next time you hear the expression "coming back to the body," you no longer imagine it as an abstract idea. But as an invitation to reconnect with a conversation that began long before you learned to speak. Because the body has never stopped perceiving. It has never stopped orienting. It has never stopped learning. Perhaps we are the ones who sometimes stop listening. And perhaps coming back to the body does not mean arriving somewhere new. Perhaps it means remembering a home that has always been with us.
