SURVIVAL RESPONSES: FIGHT, FLIGHT, FREEZE, FAWN AND COLLAPSE Most people have heard of survival responses at some point. Fight. Flight. Freeze. Fawn. Collapse. These words often appear alongside lists, diagrams, or quick explanations designed to help us identify "which one we are in." Although this language has made this knowledge more accessible to many people, it has also led to a misunderstanding. We are not a survival response. We do not live permanently in one of them. Survival responses do not describe who we are. They describe how an organism attempts to protect life when it perceives that its resources may not be enough to face a situation. That distinction is fundamental. Because it allows us to stop turning our responses into labels and begin understanding them as deeply dynamic processes. AN ORGANISM LOOKING FOR THE BEST POSSIBILITY AVAILABLE Every moment, our nervous system integrates an enormous amount of information coming from the body, the environment, and our relationships. Am I safe? Do I need to move closer? Is it better to wait? Should I move away? Do I have the resources to face this situation? These questions do not appear as conscious thoughts. They are part of an extraordinarily sophisticated biological process whose primary purpose is not to decide how we should feel. Its priority is something else. To preserve life. When the organism perceives sufficient resources and an adequate sense of safety, it can respond with flexibility. Think.

Learn. Play. Create. Rest. Connect. But when it interprets a situation as temporarily exceeding its available resources, the organism begins reorganizing itself to increase the possibilities of adaptation. This process can be expressed in different ways. Mobilizing to face what it perceives as threatening. Moving away from danger. Reducing movement. Seeking to decrease conflict. Or conserving as much energy as possible. All of these responses are part of the biological repertoire of mammals and have been extensively studied through physiology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and evolutionary biology. THEY ARE NOT FAILURES. THEY ARE ADAPTIVE LEARNINGS. One of the most important shifts brought by contemporary science has been moving away from interpreting these responses as failures of the organism. Today we understand them as adaptive strategies. Many people come looking for ways to understand the fight, flight, or freeze response, how to regulate the nervous system, how to cope with a dysregulated nervous system, reduce chronic anxiety, or find trauma therapy. At Sentido Somático, we believe all of these questions deserve to be met with respect. But before asking how to change a response, perhaps there is another, more important question. What was my organism trying to protect when it learned to respond this way? This shift in perspective profoundly changes our relationship with the body. We stop asking what is going wrong. And begin discovering the extraordinary intelligence with which the organism has tried to accompany us throughout our history. Survival responses are not signs of weakness. They are expressions of the organism's extraordinary capacity to adapt when life demands more resources than we experience as available in that moment.

And precisely because they are learned and dynamic responses, they can also continue to transform through new experiences of safety, connection, and learning. That is the journey we will explore throughout this article. UNDERSTANDING SURVIVAL RESPONSES When we look closely at survival responses, we discover something deeply meaningful. Although they may be expressed in very different ways, they all share the same intention. To protect life. There is no "better" response than another. There is no correct response and another that is wrong. Each represents the solution the organism found when it evaluated, within a fraction of a second, which possibilities were available at that particular moment. That is why, at Sentido Somático, we prefer to understand them as expressions of the same adaptive intelligence rather than as labels that define a person. FIGHT: WHEN THE ORGANISM TRIES TO REGAIN INFLUENCE The fight response appears when the nervous system perceives that sufficient resources are still available to face what it considers a threat. It is not simply about aggression. Fight can be expressed as an intense mobilization of energy. Muscle tone increases, heart rate accelerates, attention becomes directed toward what is perceived as important, and the body prepares to act. In everyday life, this response can appear in many different ways. Arguing intensely. Trying to control a situation. Firmly defending a boundary. Responding quickly. Feeling an overwhelming need to solve a problem. In certain contexts, this response has helped people protect themselves, defend others, or preserve what matters to them. That is why it cannot be understood simply as a problem. The question is not: Why did I react this way? Perhaps the question is: What was my organism trying to protect?

FLIGHT: WHEN MOVING AWAY REPRESENTS THE BEST POSSIBILITY At other times, the organism determines that remaining in a situation increases danger. The flight response appears. Biologically, it shares many characteristics with fight. It also involves mobilizing energy. But that energy is no longer directed toward confronting the situation. It is directed toward creating distance. Flight can be expressed physically. Moving away. Leaving a place. Changing direction. But it can also take much subtler forms. Keeping constantly busy. Changing the subject when a difficult emotion appears. Avoiding important conversations. Working without stopping. Seeking constant distraction. Even some forms of chronic anxiety may be understood, in part, as organisms that continue preparing to move because stopping does not yet feel completely safe. We are not talking about people who "run away from everything." We are talking about organisms that learned that, at certain points in their history, creating distance could represent the most protective possibility available. FREEZE: WHEN STOPPING ALLOWS THE ORGANISM TO ASSESS Perhaps no response has been as misunderstood as the freeze response. It is often confused with passivity. Or with a lack of willpower. Yet biologically, it represents an extraordinarily sophisticated strategy. When the organism perceives a threat and still needs to evaluate which possibility offers the greatest chance of survival, it may temporarily reduce movement. Attention becomes highly focused. Breathing changes. Muscles remain prepared. From the outside, it may look like immobility. But internally, the organism is carrying out an extremely complex evaluation.

Freeze does not necessarily mean giving up. It can mean stopping long enough to determine what comes next. In many species, this response significantly increases the possibilities of survival. And in human beings, it continues to form part of our biological repertoire. NO RESPONSE DESERVES SHAME People often feel guilty for having fought too much. Or ashamed for having run away. Or frustrated because their body became still. But perhaps none of these emotions is necessary when we understand what the organism was trying to do. Survival responses are not signs of weakness. They are expressions of the organism's extraordinary adaptive intelligence. Understanding them does not mean always justifying them. It means recognizing that they emerged in an attempt to protect what mattered most. Life. And it is precisely from that understanding that we can later approach the fawn response and collapse, perhaps the most difficult responses to understand and, at the same time, some of the ones most frequently misunderstood in the history of trauma. Because before asking how to change a response, we need to understand the profound biological wisdom from which it emerged. EXPERIENCE GIVES MEANING Many people enter a somatic therapy space for the first time seeking to understand their dysregulated nervous system, reduce chronic anxiety, or begin a process of trauma healing, carrying a very simple question. "Why do I keep reacting this way if I know I'm no longer in danger?" It is a deeply human question. And perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves. Because behind it, there is often another, quieter one. "What is wrong with me?" At Sentido Somático, we want to respond to that question with great clarity. There is nothing defective about an organism that learned to protect life. WHEN A RESPONSE STOPS BEING ONE POSSIBILITY AMONG MANY Survival responses do not create suffering simply because they exist. In fact, they have helped humanity survive for thousands of years.

Suffering often appears when a response that was deeply adaptive at a particular point in time remains available as the only possibility the organism recognizes. A person who can only fight may begin experiencing the world as a place where they must always defend themselves. Someone who can only flee may feel that stopping is unbearably difficult. Someone who frequently remains in freeze may become frustrated because they cannot understand why taking action feels so difficult when they need it most. And someone who learned to survive through the fawn response or collapse may come to believe, with enormous pain, that their needs have no place or that expressing a boundary puts the relationship at risk. Not because these responses are mistakes. But because the organism deserves access to a much broader repertoire for meeting life. FLEXIBILITY IS ALSO A FORM OF HEALTH One of the most important findings in contemporary physiology is that health does not mean remaining in one state all the time. Health involves flexibility. Our heart changes its rhythm. Our breathing changes its depth. We sleep and wake. We move and rest. We move closer and sometimes need to move away. The nervous system functions in a similar way. We are not trying to eliminate survival responses. That would be impossible. And it would not be desirable. What we seek is for the organism to recognize more possibilities. To be able to fight when it truly needs to protect a boundary. To move away when a situation is harmful. To pause when it needs time to assess. And also to return to calm, connection, play, rest, and presence when conditions allow. Nervous system regulation does not mean remaining calm all the time. It means recovering the capacity to move with greater freedom between different responses according to what each moment requires. SHAME CAN ALSO TRANSFORM Perhaps one of the most painful consequences of survival responses is shame. Many people feel guilty for reacting with anger. Or for becoming still.

Or for being unable to say "no." Or for trying to please others when, in reality, they needed to protect themselves. But when we understand the extraordinary adaptive intelligence of the organism, shame can begin to lose some of its power. Not because everything is suddenly explained. But because we stop interpreting these responses as personal failures. We begin to recognize them as part of a history of learning. And from that place, something profoundly different becomes possible. Compassion. Not a compassion that immobilizes us. But one that allows us to look at our history with greater truth and less harshness. At Sentido Somático, we believe many women do not need to learn how to fight against their survival responses. They need to discover that those responses do not define who they are. They are simply some of the ways their organism tried to protect what mattered most. Life. And perhaps that discovery is the beginning of a much kinder relationship with the body. Because when we stop feeling ashamed of the way we survived, space begins to open for discovering new ways of living. Not by replacing one response with another. But by gradually expanding the possibilities from which our organism can meet the world. PRACTICE TRANSFORMS After understanding survival responses, many people feel the desire to change them as quickly as possible. It is understandable. When a response creates suffering, it is natural to want it to disappear. However, at Sentido Somático, we propose a pause. Before asking how to change a response, perhaps we can ask something different. What does my organism need today? This question profoundly changes the direction of the process. We are no longer trying to control the body. We begin relating to it. PRACTICE BEGINS WITH OBSERVATION

For a long time, we have learned to intervene quickly in whatever makes us uncomfortable. We feel anxiety. We try to eliminate it. Tension appears. We try to relax it. Our body becomes still. We immediately want to get it out of that state. Somatic practice begins differently. It begins with observation. How is my body breathing right now? Where do I feel supported? Where do I notice more effort? What is my organism trying to do? Where is my attention naturally going? These questions are not looking for a problem. They are seeking to understand a process. Because an organism that feels observed with respect responds very differently from one that constantly feels corrected. ACCOMPANYING BEFORE CORRECTING One of the principles that runs through the philosophy of Sentido Somático is that relationship transforms more deeply than control. That is why, when we observe a survival response, our first intention is not to eliminate it. It is to accompany it. Perhaps one part of our organism still needs to discover that the present offers different conditions. Perhaps it needs to discover, gradually, that more resources are available today. That it is no longer completely alone. That it can rest for a moment. That it can set a boundary. That it can move closer without losing itself. These experiences do not appear because we impose them. They appear when the organism begins to recognize enough safety to explore new possibilities. SMALL EXPERIENCES, MEANINGFUL LEARNING We often imagine that transformation happens through extraordinary experiences. Research on learning shows us something different. The organism also learns through small, repeated, and coherent experiences.

A breath that gradually becomes more spacious. A relationship in which we can express a need without feeling judged. A moment of rest experienced without guilt. The possibility of saying "no" when we truly need to. The experience of discovering that someone remains beside us even when we show vulnerability. Each of these experiences can expand the nervous system's repertoire. Not because they automatically erase previous learning. But because they offer new references from which the organism can continue organizing its relationship with life. That is why, at Sentido Somático, we do not seek to make the body stop protecting itself. We seek to offer sufficiently safe experiences through which it can discover that today it has more possibilities than the ones it once needed in order to survive. A PRACTICE FOR THIS WEEK Over the next few days, when you notice an automatic response, try not to rush to change it. Pause. Breathe naturally, without trying to alter your rhythm. And ask yourself gently: What is my organism trying to protect right now? Then add a second question. What small experience might help it discover that another possibility also exists today? Perhaps it is looking around and recognizing that you are not alone. Perhaps feeling your feet on the ground. Perhaps calling someone you trust. Perhaps giving yourself permission to rest. Do not look for the perfect practice. Look for an experience your organism can recognize as sufficiently safe. Because transformation rarely happens because of the intensity of a technique. Very often, it begins with the simplicity of an experience lived with presence, respect, and continuity. And little by little, those small experiences can expand the way we inhabit our body, our relationships, and our lives. RESEARCH CONTINUES Over the past several decades, research into survival responses has evolved enormously.

Today we understand much more about how the nervous system organizes responses to threat, how it learns from experience, and how it maintains the capacity to reorganize throughout life. At the same time, science reminds us of something deeply important. We are still learning. Every year, new research emerges on nervous system regulation, chronic stress, fight, flight, and freeze responses, neuroplasticity, learning, connection, co-regulation, and recovery following potentially traumatic experiences. Rather than offering definitive answers, these developments continue to expand our understanding of the extraordinary complexity of the human organism. WHAT WE KNOW TODAY There is broad agreement that survival responses are part of the normal biological repertoire of human beings. They are not defects. They do not indicate weakness. They are not failures of the organism. They are adaptive strategies that emerge when the nervous system perceives a need to protect life. We also know that these responses are not permanent. The organism retains the capacity to continue learning throughout life. That capacity is one of the most hopeful aspects of contemporary neuroscience. WHAT WE ARE STILL LEARNING There are still open questions. How do early experiences influence the organization of these responses? What role do attachment, somatic therapy, movement, breathing, rest, and safe relationships play in expanding the adaptive repertoire? How can we better understand the enormous diversity with which different organisms respond to similar experiences? Research continues to explore these questions through neuroscience, developmental psychology, physiology, evolutionary biology, and cognitive sciences. And it will probably continue doing so for many years. A VIEW TOWARD THE FUTURE Perhaps the greatest contribution science can offer us today is not only an explanation of how survival responses work. Perhaps it is also helping us stop being ashamed of them.

Understanding that our organism did the best it could with the resources available to it does not automatically eliminate suffering. But it profoundly transforms the relationship we build with our history. At Sentido Somático, we do not accompany the body so that it stops protecting itself. We accompany it so that it can discover that today it can protect life in more ways. That is why our practice is not about forcing the body to change. It is about creating the conditions in which the organism can continue learning. And perhaps that is one of the most important differences between controlling and accompanying. We do not force transformation. We cultivate the conditions from which transformation can emerge. Because we know that a living organism does not need to be pushed in order to learn. It needs experiences that are safe enough to expand the possibilities from which it can meet itself, others, and life. That may be one of the greatest reasons for hope offered by contemporary science. Survival responses are not a destiny. They are part of a history of learning. And every organism that has learned also retains the possibility of continuing to learn. That is why, at Sentido Somático, we do not seek to change who you are. And we believe that, as those possibilities begin to expand, so does the freedom with which we inhabit our bodies, our relationships, and our history. Because the deepest transformation is not about ceasing to be who we are. It is about discovering that life can always offer us new ways to respond, to relate, and to care for what matters most.
