Trauma and Chronic Stress Why do some experiences seem to end… while the body continues living as if they were still happening? There are moments in life that we remember clearly. We can say when they happened. How old we were. Who was there. We may even be able to tell the story in detail. And yet, there are other experiences that seem to remain present long after the events themselves have ended. Not because we are constantly remembering them. But because, at times, the body continues to respond as though it still needs to protect us. Perhaps this has happened to you. Maybe an everyday situation triggers an emotional intensity that seems disproportionate. A look. A tone of voice. An argument. Rejection. A feeling of uncertainty. And before you can understand what is happening, you notice that your breathing changes, your muscles tense, or an urgent need arises to escape, defend yourself, or disconnect. Many people begin to think that something is wrong with them. That they are too sensitive. That they should have "gotten over" what happened a long time ago. Or that there is some flaw in the way they deal with life. However, current research on trauma, chronic stress, and nervous system regulation invites us to consider a very different possibility. What if these responses were not a sign of weakness? What if they were an expression of an organism that did exactly what it needed to do to try to protect life at a particular moment? Over the past several decades, fields such as neuroscience, developmental psychology, stress physiology, and somatic education have profoundly expanded our understanding of trauma. Today we know that trauma cannot be understood solely by looking at what happened.

It also depends on how the nervous system experienced that event, the resources that were available at the time, and the possibility —or impossibility— of subsequently returning to a state of safety. And begins to ask as well: "What did your organism need to do in order to try to keep going?" The difference may seem small. But it completely transforms the conversation. Neuroplasticity, the quality of relationships, repeated experiences of safety, movement, rest, and different therapeutic processes can support new forms of adaptation and greater emotional recovery. It is an extraordinarily sophisticated response that has supported the survival of our species for millions of years. Whenever the nervous system perceives a challenge, it mobilizes resources to help us respond. Breathing changes. The heart beats faster. The muscles receive more energy. Attention becomes focused on whatever seems most important. All of this happens because the organism is trying to increase our capacity to adapt. When the situation ends and the body perceives that the danger has passed, these systems normally begin to return gradually toward a state of greater balance. This movement between activation and recovery is part of a healthy and flexible organism. However, research on trauma, chronic stress, and nervous system regulation has shown that this cycle does not always unfold in the same way. Some experiences are so intense, last so long, or occur during particularly vulnerable periods that the organism needs to keep its protective mechanisms activated for longer. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), the autonomic nervous system, the immune system, and other physiological processes participate in this ongoing effort to maintain stability. Bruce McEwen referred to this phenomenon as allostatic load, a concept describing the biological cost that can develop when the organism maintains its adaptive mechanisms for too long. This does not mean that the body is failing. It means that it has been making an enormous effort to sustain life. The good news is that the nervous system is not static. Research on neuroplasticity demonstrates that the brain and organism retain a remarkable capacity to continue learning and reorganizing throughout life. Safe relationships. Movement. Rest. Physical activity.

Sleep. Repeated experiences of regulation. Trauma-informed psychotherapy. Somatic education. And other evidence-informed resources can support the organism in gradually recovering greater flexibility. This does not mean erasing the past. Nor does it mean forgetting what happened. It means expanding the nervous system's capacity to recognize new experiences of safety and respond to the present with more resources than were available at another point in life. Understanding this profoundly transforms our perspective. We stop asking why the body "doesn't get over" certain experiences. And begin recognizing that, in reality, it has been doing exactly what it was designed to do. Trying to protect life. Perhaps this is one of the most important contributions of contemporary science. To remind us that many responses that create suffering today were, at some point, extraordinarily intelligent expressions of adaptation. And that understanding this intelligence is one of the first steps toward building a more respectful, compassionate, and hopeful relationship with our own body. Experience Gives Meaning When surviving becomes the only way of living There are people who spend years believing that they are too sensitive. That they overreact. That they worry about insignificant things. That they can never fully relax. Or that they are always waiting for something bad to happen, even when everything seems fine. They often try to change these responses. They make an effort to think differently. They read. They use different strategies to try to understand what is happening. They meditate. They tell themselves that there is no danger. And yet, the body continues to respond. That can be deeply frustrating. Because when the mind understands one thing while the body seems to experience something completely different, it is easy to feel as though we are fighting against ourselves.

But what would happen if we looked at that experience from another perspective? What if, instead of thinking that the body is overreacting, we began to ask ourselves how long it has been living while trying to protect us? Imagine a person who, for years, has had to remain constantly alert. Perhaps they grew up in an unpredictable environment. Perhaps they never knew what emotional state the adults around them would be in. Maybe they learned that it was safer to constantly observe their surroundings before relaxing. Or perhaps they went through a period of loss, illness, violence, or uncertainty in which staying alert increased their ability to adapt. Over time, that vigilance may stop feeling like an effort. It simply becomes the habitual way of being in the world. Like someone who lives beside a busy road and, after a while, stops noticing the constant noise. The fact that we have become accustomed to it does not mean the noise has disappeared. Something similar can happen within the nervous system. When activation remains for a long time, the organism may come to experience it as part of normal life. This is why many people discover that they only understand the degree of tension they have been living with when, for the first time, they experience a genuine moment of rest. Then a phrase often appears: "I didn't know how tired I was until I was able to rest." Not because the exhaustion began in that moment. But because, finally, there was enough safety to feel it. Perhaps this is one of the most moving experiences of working with the body. Discovering that many responses we interpreted for years as flaws were actually deeply intelligent attempts at adaptation. Hypervigilance may once have provided protection. The need for control may have offered a sense of stability. Difficulty trusting may have helped prevent further harm at another point in life. Because although trauma can leave a profound mark, that mark is not the end of the story. Life continues to offer new opportunities for learning. And the nervous system retains an extraordinary capacity to keep transforming when it finds the conditions that allow it to do so. Practice Transforms An invitation to the body After understanding a little more about the relationship between trauma and chronic stress, perhaps you do not need to analyze your history any further right now. Maybe it is enough to offer your body a different experience. Not to change it. Not to convince it that everything is fine. Simply to remind it that there are also moments when it does not have to carry the entire burden on its own. If it feels comfortable, pause for a few minutes. You do not need to close your eyes. You do not need to reach a special state. Simply give yourself permission to be here. Begin by observing the place where you are. Allow your gaze to move slowly through the space. Without searching for anything in particular. Perhaps you notice a plant. The light coming through a window.

A color you find pleasant. The texture of a wall. Or any detail that awakens a sense of calm or, simply, neutrality. Allow your eyes to rest there for a few moments. Then gently bring your attention to the contact between your body and whatever is supporting it. Perhaps your feet on the floor. Your back against the chair. Your hands resting on your legs. You do not need to change anything. Simply recognize that, in this moment, something is supporting you. Now observe your breathing. Do not try to make it deeper. Do not try to relax. Simply notice how the air comes in and goes out. Perhaps today your breathing is spacious. Perhaps it is short. Perhaps it changes. Whatever it is, allow it to be enough. If you wish, you can ask yourself with curiosity: Is there any part of my body that, in this moment, feels a little more comfortable than the others? Do not search for a complete absence of tension. You do not need to. Perhaps you notice one shoulder resting a little more. The warmth of your hands. The stability of your feet. The sensation of support in your back. Or simply a small place where the body does not need to make any additional effort. Stay there for a few seconds. Without trying to make the sensation grow. Simply recognizing that it is also part of your experience. Before continuing with your day, give yourself one final question. What small act of care could I offer my nervous system today? Perhaps going to bed a little earlier. Going for a walk. Breathing outdoors for a few minutes. Talking with someone you trust. Listening to music. Moving your body gently. Taking a break without feeling guilty.

Or simply remembering that you do not have to solve your entire life in a single day. Nervous system regulation rarely appears as the result of one extraordinary moment. It often emerges from small, repeated experiences that help the organism discover that safety can also be part of the present. It is not about erasing the past. It is about gradually expanding the number of experiences that teach the body that there are also spaces where it can rest. Because every moment of support. Every pause. Every safe relationship. Every conscious breath. Every gesture of kindness toward yourself. Is an opportunity for the nervous system to continue learning. And perhaps that is one of the most hopeful messages of contemporary neuroscience. Our body never stops learning. And as long as that capacity for learning remains, there is also the possibility of continuing to build new experiences of safety, connection, and life. Research Continues For much of the twentieth century, trauma research focused primarily on understanding what happened when a person went through extreme experiences, such as war, natural disasters, or violence. Thanks to these studies, we now understand much more about how the organism responds when it perceives a threat to survival. However, science has profoundly expanded this perspective. We now know that trauma does not depend only on the event itself, but also on the way the nervous system is able —or unable— to integrate the experience. Factors such as age, social support, the quality of relationships with others, previous history, and available resources significantly influence how each organism responds. At the same time, contemporary research continues to explore how chronic stress affects different systems of the body when adaptive processes remain activated for long periods. Today we have a better understanding of the relationship between sustained stress and the functioning of the immune system, cardiovascular system, sleep, memory, emotional regulation, inflammation, metabolism, and numerous physiological processes involved in everyday health. But perhaps one of the most hopeful changes of recent decades is not simply understanding how suffering develops. It is also understanding how recovery emerges.

Neuroplasticity has demonstrated that the brain retains an extraordinary capacity to reorganize throughout life. Attachment research has shown the importance of safe relationships in supporting processes of regulation. Studies on movement, physical exercise, sleep, contact with nature, breathing, contemplative practices, and somatic education continue to expand our understanding of the conditions that support greater nervous system flexibility. This does not mean that there is a single intervention capable of resolving every experience of trauma. Every story is different. Every organism has its own rhythm. And every recovery process needs to respect that uniqueness. For precisely this reason, contemporary science is moving increasingly away from universal solutions and toward integrative models in which the body, mind, relationships, social context, and personal history form part of the same conversation.
