Science Explains Pain is real, even when it does not always mean tissue damage For a long time, we learned to understand pain in a relatively simple way. There is an injury. The injury sends a signal to the brain.
And the brain registers that signal as pain. This model is useful for explaining many experiences, but today we know that pain is considerably more complex. The tissues of the body contain specialized receptors capable of detecting potentially dangerous changes, such as intense pressure, extreme temperatures, or inflammatory processes. And we can also experience very intense pain when tissues have already healed or when medical tests do not identify an injury sufficient to explain the intensity of the experience. None of this means that the pain is imaginary. Pain is always real. What it means is that its primary function is protection. When the brain and nervous system consider that a part of the body needs protection, they can increase sensitivity. It is like an alarm system. Imagine a smoke alarm. We want it to be sensitive enough to warn us when there is a fire. But after several dangerous situations, we might imagine that the alarm begins responding more easily. It no longer needs a room full of smoke. Perhaps it now also reacts to steam from the shower or to bread that remains in the toaster a few seconds too long. The alarm is functioning. This distinction matters. Because healing trauma or working with persistent pain does not necessarily mean finding something hidden inside the body and releasing it. And embodied experiences that allow the nervous system to gradually update what it expects from the world and from the body itself. Allow it to be simply enough for this moment. Begin by noticing your breathing. You do not need to change it. Simply accompany it for a few moments. Then gently bring your attention toward the area where the pain appears. Not to analyze it. Just to acknowledge that it is there. Perhaps you can describe it with curiosity. Is it pressure? A sensation of warmth? A sharp feeling? A heaviness? Does it change while you observe it? There is no need to find the correct answer. Simply observe. Now, very slowly, allow your attention to expand. Beyond the pain... What other sensations are present right now? Perhaps you notice the contact of your clothes against your skin. The temperature of the air. The support of the chair.
The weight of your feet on the floor. The movement of your breathing. The warmth of your hands. Or a part of your body that, for now, feels relatively comfortable. This is not about replacing pain with another sensation. It is about discovering that the body always contains more than one experience at the same time. For a few moments, gently alternate your attention. One moment with the painful area. Another moment with a sensation of support. Then return to the pain. And once again to the support. Without forcing. Without trying to change anything. Simply allowing the nervous system to discover that it can move between different experiences. Before finishing, ask yourself gently: "What small act of care would my body appreciate today?" Perhaps it needs movement. Perhaps rest. A quiet walk. A nourishing meal. Some time in the sunlight. A conversation. Setting a boundary. Sleeping a little longer. Asking for help. Or simply releasing the demand to respond as though nothing were happening. Recovery rarely happens through one great change. It is often built through small, repeated experiences that teach the organism that there can also be moments of support, safety, and well-being. This does not mean denying pain. It means broadening the experience. Because the nervous system learns from what we experience again and again. And every time the body discovers a sensation of support, even for a few seconds, it is also learning something new. It is learning that life is not made only of what hurts. It is also made of contact. Movement. Rest. Relationship. Beauty.
And countless experiences that continue reminding the organism that, besides protecting us, it can also participate fully in life again.
