Trauma and Relationships How our experiences shape the way we connect with others Have you ever wondered why some relationships make us feel deeply at ease, while others awaken a tension that seems difficult to explain? Perhaps you know someone with whom silence feels comfortable. There is no need to impress. You do not have to measure every word. You can simply be yourself. And, without even realizing it, your body breathes more freely. The opposite can also happen. There are relationships in which we remain constantly alert. We think too much before speaking. We are afraid of disappointing the other person. We find it difficult to set boundaries. Or we feel the need to please in order to avoid conflict. In other cases, when someone tries to get close, an almost automatic impulse to withdraw appears. Not because we do not want closeness. But because something inside us seems to say that keeping a certain distance is safer. These experiences are much more common than we imagine. And for a long time, they were interpreted as personality traits. "I'm too distrustful." "I always choose the wrong partners." "I don't know how to relate to people." "I'm not capable of love." However, contemporary research in neuroscience, attachment theory, and trauma-informed approaches offers a much broader and deeply compassionate understanding. Today we know that our relationships do not depend solely on the conscious decisions we make. They also involve the nervous system, the history of our relationships, early caregiving experiences, our sense of safety, and the way our organism has learned to protect us throughout life. From the moment we are born, our brain and body begin learning a fundamental question: Is it safe for me to move toward other people? The answer is not built through words alone.

It is formed through thousands of experiences. The way someone holds us. How they respond when we cry. The tone of a voice. The emotional availability of those who care for us. The presence or absence of protection. Experiences of connection. And also experiences of loss, rejection, violence, or abandonment. Over time, all these experiences help the nervous system build expectations about relationships. Not as fixed rules. But as learned patterns that attempt to anticipate what might help us remain safe. This is why many responses that are difficult for us to understand today may once have been extraordinary strategies of adaptation. Difficulty trusting. The need to control. Fear of abandonment. The tendency to avoid intimacy. The constant search for approval. Or the feeling that we must always take care of other people. None of these responses mean that something is broken inside us. They often reflect the way an organism learned to protect life within the circumstances it had to live through. Understanding this does not mean justifying relationships that hurt us. Nor does it mean that we are destined to repeat the same patterns forever. On the contrary. Neuroscience reminds us that the nervous system retains an extraordinary capacity to continue learning throughout life. This means that new experiences of safety, healthy relationships, and emotional recovery can help the organism develop different ways of relating. Throughout this article, we will explore how childhood trauma, complex trauma, and other difficult experiences can influence our relationships, what science tells us about the connection between the nervous system and human relationships, and why understanding these processes can open the door to a kinder way of meeting others and ourselves. Because perhaps the question is no longer: "What is wrong with the way I relate to people?" Perhaps the question is something else, much more compassionate and deeply human: "What did my nervous system learn about love, closeness, and safety… and what new experiences might help it write a different story?"

Science Explains The nervous system also learns how to relate When we think about human relationships, we usually imagine conversations, emotions, decisions, and shared experiences. All of these are part of a relationship. But there is another dimension that works quietly, often outside our awareness. Our nervous system. From the very beginning of life, the organism does not only learn how to breathe, feed, or move. It also learns how to relate. Every gaze. Every embrace. Every response to our crying. Every moment of protection. Every experience of calm. And also every experience of fear, rejection, abandonment, or unpredictability contributes to shaping the way the nervous system interprets closeness with other people. This learning begins long before we can remember it in words. A baby's brain is still developing. Yet the organism is already registering essential information. When I need help, does someone respond? Does my distress find comfort? Does human contact generally feel safe? Can I explore the world knowing there is somewhere to return to? These experiences are part of what attachment theory, initially developed by John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth and many other researchers, has studied for decades. Today we know that early relationships do not completely determine our lives. But they do contribute to building internal models about how we expect relationships to work. Contemporary neuroscience has enriched this understanding by showing that these learned patterns are also reflected in the way the nervous system regulates safety, trust, and closeness. From the perspective of Polyvagal Theory, proposed by Stephen Porges, our organism continuously evaluates whether a relationship appears to support safety or whether it requires greater protection. This evaluation occurs automatically and has been described as neuroception. It is not a conscious judgment.

It is a biological process through which the organism integrates signals such as tone of voice, facial expression, body posture, interpersonal distance, movement, and many other aspects of the environment. When the nervous system perceives enough signals of safety, it may become easier to talk, cooperate, express emotions, listen, learn, and enjoy being with other people. When it interprets a possible threat, however, different protective strategies may become activated. Some people become more vigilant. Others constantly try to please. Some react with irritability. Others prefer to withdraw emotionally. There are also people who find it deeply difficult to ask for help, even when they need it. These responses do not appear because someone consciously decided to behave this way. They often represent learned patterns that the organism developed to protect itself at particular moments in life. Here it is important to make a clarification. Not every difficulty in relationships is the result of childhood trauma or complex trauma. Human relationships are extraordinarily complex. Personality, culture, life experiences, individual differences, physical health, social context, and many other factors also participate in the way we connect with others. However, research indicates that early experiences of caregiving and safety can significantly influence how the nervous system learns to respond within relationships. And here we encounter one of the most hopeful messages from neuroscience. Learning does not end in childhood. Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain and nervous system retain the capacity throughout life to develop new connections and new ways of responding. This means that new experiences of safety, healthy relationships, and respectful connection can also become important learning experiences for the organism. A friendship in which we feel heard. A partner who respects our boundaries. A therapeutic relationship based on trust. A community where we can show up as ourselves. Even small everyday encounters in which we experience respect, presence, and acceptance can become new learning experiences for the organism. This does not mean that relationships "heal" trauma automatically. Nor does it mean that another person is responsible for repairing our history. It means that the nervous system continues learning through experience.

And relationships are one of the contexts in which this learning continues throughout life. Perhaps this is why understanding our difficulties in relationships does not require us to ask only: "What am I doing wrong?" We can also ask: "What did my organism learn about safety in relationships… and what new experiences might help expand that understanding?" Because, ultimately, relationships are not simply an important part of our lives. They are also part of the environment in which the nervous system repeatedly learns what it means to feel safe, accompanied, and fully human. Experience Gives Meaning When we learn to protect ourselves… even from what we need most Few human experiences have as much power to transform us as a relationship. Within a relationship, we can feel deeply seen. Supported. Accepted. But we can also experience rejection. Abandonment. Betrayal. Indifference. Or the feeling that we have to become someone different in order to deserve love. It is therefore not surprising that relationships awaken some of the strongest emotions of our lives. We often think that our difficulties connecting with others reveal something about our character. We say: "I'm very distrustful." "It's hard for me to open up." "I always end up pushing people away." "I need other people too much." "I don't know how to set boundaries." Yet many times these statements describe much more accurately the history of a nervous system that learned to protect itself than a flaw in personality. Imagine a child growing up without knowing for certain when affection will be available. Sometimes they receive comfort. Other times, indifference.

Sometimes they experience closeness. At other times, rejection. That child cannot change the behavior of the people around them. All they can do is adapt. Perhaps they learn to please in order to maintain the relationship. Perhaps they discover that expressing their needs is dangerous. Maybe they stop asking for help. Or they become convinced that depending on someone will always end in pain. Over the years, these strategies can become habitual ways of relating. Not because the person chose to live that way. But because, for a long time, these responses increased their chances of feeling protected. Here a deeply compassionate idea emerges. Many of the behaviors that cause suffering today were, at another point in life, extraordinary survival strategies. The need to constantly please. Difficulty trusting. Fear of intimacy. Hypervigilance within a partnership. Fear of abandonment. Or the feeling that we must always solve other people's problems. All of these can be understood as expressions of an organism that did the best it could with the resources available at the time. This does not mean that these strategies are still necessary today. It means they deserve to be understood before we try to change them. Because no one simply abandons a protective strategy because someone tells them they no longer need it. The nervous system needs to experience something new. It needs to discover, little by little, that there are relationships in which respect does not depend on perfection. Where boundaries do not destroy love. Where disagreement does not mean abandonment. Where we can make mistakes without losing our worth. And where closeness does not mean losing our freedom. Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons of emotional recovery. It is not only about intellectually understanding our history. It also involves allowing the body to experience something different. A conversation in which we feel heard. An embrace that demands nothing in return. A friendship where we can say "no" without fear. A relationship in which we do not constantly need to prove our worth. Each of these experiences offers the organism new information. They do not erase the past.

But they can expand the way the nervous system understands the present. At Sentido Somático, we believe that relationships are not only places where suffering can emerge. They can also become spaces where life gradually regains its capacity for trust. Because a relationship that once became a source of pain can also become, when respect, safety, and presence are present, a place where the organism discovers that it no longer needs to protect itself in quite the same way. And perhaps this is one of the most hopeful messages science offers us. Our nervous system never stops learning. As long as new experiences are possible, there is also the possibility of developing new ways of loving, trusting, and participating in relationships. Not because we forget our history. But because we stop believing that our history has to write our future forever. Practice Transforms An invitation to the body When we think about improving our relationships, we often imagine long conversations, important agreements, or profound changes. And, certainly, all of these can be part of the process. But before words appear, there is something much quieter. The way our body experiences another person's presence. Our nervous system is constantly observing. It does not only listen to what someone says. It also perceives the tone of their voice. The expression on their face. The speed of their movements. The distance they maintain. The way they look at us. And, at the same time, our own body is also sending signals. Tension in the shoulders. Breathing. Posture. The rhythm of our speech. Pauses. All of this forms part of a silent conversation that occurs in every human encounter. Today I invite you to try a very simple practice. It is not intended to change the way you relate to others. It is simply an invitation to observe it with greater curiosity. Think of a person with whom you generally feel at ease. They do not have to be perfect. Simply someone whose presence tends to awaken a sense of relative comfort.

As you think of that person, notice your body. Does your breathing change slightly? Does your face soften? Do your shoulders lower a little? Do you notice a sense of greater spaciousness? There is no correct answer. Simply observe. Now think, for a few seconds, about a recent situation in which you felt especially tense or uncomfortable in a relationship. Do not stay there for too long. Just long enough to notice what happens in your organism. Perhaps your breathing changes. Maybe your jaw tightens. Your shoulders may rise. Perhaps you notice nothing at all. All possibilities are valid. Now return your attention to the first person. Allow your attention to come back to that experience of greater ease. Notice how the body can also change when the context changes. You are not imagining these differences. Your nervous system actively participates in every relationship. Before finishing, ask yourself a question with great kindness: What people, places, or experiences help my body remember what safety feels like? Perhaps it is a friend. A family member. Your partner. A therapist. A group where you can be yourself. Nature. Your pet. A body-based practice. Or even certain moments of silence with yourself. You do not need to transform all your relationships overnight. The nervous system learns gradually. Every experience in which you feel respected. Every conversation where you can express what you think without fear. Every boundary you are able to set without losing the sense that you are worthy of love. Every encounter in which you discover that you do not constantly have to prove your value. All of these become new learning experiences.

Over time, these small experiences can help the organism expand its understanding of what a safe relationship can feel like. Not because the world stops being challenging. But because the body discovers that there are also relationships in which it can rest. Perhaps this is one of the deepest gifts we can offer our nervous system. Not forcing it to trust. But creating, again and again, experiences in which trust has the opportunity to grow naturally. Because relationships do not change only when we learn new ideas. They also change when the body repeatedly experiences something that teaches it that closeness does not have to feel like danger and can, little by little, become a place where it is possible to breathe, belong, and feel at home. Research Continues For much of the twentieth century, research into human relationships focused primarily on understanding behavior, personality, and emotions. We continue to learn from these fields, but neuroscience has broadened the conversation by showing that every relationship is also a biological experience. Every human encounter influences our nervous system in one way or another. When we feel heard, respected, and understood, the organism may reduce some of the energy it devotes to constant vigilance and make more resources available for learning, creativity, emotional regulation, and connection. By contrast, when we live within relationships characterized by fear, unpredictability, rejection, or violence, the body may increase its protective responses. Not because it has chosen to do so. But because it is trying to keep us safe. Research on attachment theory has shown for decades that early caregiving experiences influence the way we learn to trust, ask for help, and regulate our emotions. At the same time, Polyvagal Theory has contributed to the contemporary conversation by proposing that the nervous system continually evaluates signals of safety present in our relationships. Interpersonal neuroscience continues to investigate how relationships influence brain development, physiological regulation, and health throughout life. These perspectives do not necessarily compete with one another. They complement one another. Each contributes an important part of the landscape. We also know that healthy relationships do not automatically eliminate suffering or "cure" childhood trauma or complex trauma on their own.

However, relationships characterized by trust, respect, stability, and safety can become important protective factors for physical and emotional health. Research also continues to explore how prolonged loneliness, social isolation, and highly conflictual relationships may influence stress, inflammation, sleep, the immune system, and other processes related to well-being. All of this reminds us of a profoundly simple idea. Human beings are not organisms designed to live completely isolated from one another. Our biology has also evolved to live in relationship. Perhaps one of the most important questions science is asking today is no longer simply: How does the nervous system respond to danger? It is also asking: What happens in the organism when we experience relationships in which we can feel safe, seen, and accepted? Every year, new studies expand this conversation. And they continue moving us toward a more integrated understanding of the human being. A question to keep exploring What kind of relationship helps my body breathe more easily and allows me to show up as I am? Do not think only about major relationships. Perhaps you remember a friendship. A teacher. A family member. An unexpected conversation. Someone who knew how to listen without trying to change you. Or perhaps you discover that this relationship can also begin with yourself. Because the way we speak to ourselves, treat ourselves, and respond to our own needs is also part of the environment in which the nervous system learns. And perhaps one of the most transformative experiences is not finding perfect people. It is discovering, little by little, relationships in which we no longer have to live proving that we deserve to be loved. Because when the organism experiences enough safety, something extraordinarily human can happen. It stops dedicating all its energy to protection. And begins, once again, to participate fully in life. The Research Behind This Article At Sentido Somático, we understand that human relationships are not simply encounters between people.

Through this capacity, new experiences of respect, safety, cooperation, and support can contribute to developing different ways of relating. Science continues to explore how relationships influence brain function, the immune system, emotional regulation, cardiovascular health, persistent pain, sleep, and many other biological processes. We are also continuing to learn how different forms of support, therapeutic intervention, and community experiences can contribute to emotional recovery in people who have experienced childhood trauma, complex trauma, or prolonged periods of chronic stress. Each new discovery expands our understanding of the extraordinary human capacity to learn and transform through relationships. And perhaps it is important to maintain humility regarding what we do not yet know. Science continues to evolve. Our understanding of relationships, trauma, and the nervous system evolves with it. But we also want to remember something that runs through this entire Knowledge Center. Science does not exist to convince us that we are damaged. It exists to help us better understand the extraordinary intelligence with which our organism attempts to adapt, protect life, and build meaningful relationships. We believe that no person is defined by the relationships they experienced in the past. History matters. But it does not completely determine the future. As long as there is the capacity to learn, there is also the possibility of creating new experiences of trust, belonging, and safety. It is also discovering, one relationship at a time, that our nervous system can learn that closeness, respect, and love can also feel safe.
