Trauma and Sleep When the body cannot find rest There are people who reach the end of the day completely exhausted and yet, when they finally go to bed, sleep does not come. The body is tired. The mind is too. But something remains awake. Perhaps thoughts begin to repeat themselves over and over. Perhaps every sound feels too intense. Or maybe sleep comes for a few minutes and then disappears again and again throughout the night. Other people have a different experience. They may sleep for many hours and still wake up feeling as though they have not rested. As if the body had continued working while they were trying to sleep. What if, instead of asking why the body cannot sleep, we began asking how long it has felt that staying awake was a form of protection? Imagine a child growing up in a home where they never know what will happen when night falls. Perhaps they hear arguments. Perhaps they are afraid someone will enter their room. Perhaps they live with unpredictable adults. Or perhaps they experience an environment in which rest never feels completely safe. That child does not consciously decide to remain alert. Not a technique for forcing the body to sleep. But an opportunity to offer it an experience of greater safety. Because sleep cannot be forced. Just as a flower cannot be made to open by pulling on its petals, rest appears when it finds the right conditions. This practice can be done before going to bed or at any time during the day. It is not intended to make you fall asleep immediately. Its intention is to help your nervous system discover that there are moments when it does not need to remain completely alert. If it feels comfortable, find a position in which your body can feel supported. You do not need to close your eyes. Many people feel more comfortable keeping them open or partially open, especially if they have experienced difficult or overwhelming situations. Allow your gaze to slowly move through the space. Notice the colors. The shapes. The light. The objects around you. Do not look for anything special. Simply allow your eyes to find something that awakens a sense of calm or, simply, neutrality. Stay there for a few seconds. Then bring your attention to the contact between your body and whatever is supporting you. The bed. The chair. The sofa. The floor beneath your feet. Feel the weight of your body.

You do not need to relax it. Simply notice that you do not have to hold yourself up entirely on your own. Now listen. What sounds are present right now? Perhaps the wind. A fan. A bird singing. Silence. Or the familiar sounds of your home. Do not judge them. Simply recognize that they are part of your environment. Then gently bring your attention to your breathing. Do not try to slow it down. Do not try to breathe perfectly. Allow the air to enter and leave at its own rhythm. As it has done thousands of times before you began observing it. Now, very gently, ask yourself: Is there something, however small, that makes this place feel a little safer for me right now? Perhaps it is a blanket. The temperature of the room. The presence of someone you love in the house. A closed door. Dim light. Silence. The feeling of the pillow. Or simply the fact that you are giving yourself a few minutes of care. Do not look for a perfect answer. Just allow the body to find one small signal of support. Before finishing, offer yourself one final question. How can I accompany my nervous system tonight with a little more kindness? Perhaps the answer is not falling asleep immediately. Perhaps it is stopping the struggle with insomnia. Accepting that today the body needs more time. Reading a few pages of a book. Listening to quiet music. Breathing beside an open window. Or simply remembering that being awake does not mean you have failed. The nervous system learns through repetition. It does not need a perfect night to begin trusting. It needs many small experiences in which it discovers that rest can also be safe.

There is no single formula that applies to everyone. But there does seem to be a common principle. Deep rest rarely appears simply because we are tired. It often emerges when the organism discovers, again and again, that it no longer needs to remain constantly vigilant.
