What actually happens in the nervous system when a person experiences a potentially traumatic event? For a long time, trauma was thought to belong primarily to the field of psychology. Today we know that the answer is much broader. A potentially traumatic experience does not involve thoughts or emotions alone. It mobilizes virtually the entire organism. The brain. The autonomic nervous system. The endocrine system. The immune system. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Attention. Memory. Perception. Movement. In other words, when the organism perceives that life may be at risk, it is not only one part of us that responds. The whole human being responds. An organism designed to protect life From an evolutionary perspective, the nervous system was not designed to keep us calm at all times. Its primary task, for millions of years, has been something quite different. Keeping us alive. To accomplish this, the organism needs to respond extremely quickly when it detects a threat. In many situations, it cannot wait for us to reason carefully about what is happening. It needs to mobilize resources within milliseconds. Increase attention. Change heart rate. Alter breathing. Redirect energy toward the muscles.

Prioritize survival over other functions that, in that moment, can wait. This is not a mistake. It is an extraordinary capacity for adaptation. Without these responses, our species would have had far less chance of surviving. When the threat exceeds our capacity to respond Most stressful situations we experience throughout life can be processed and integrated by the organism. However, some experiences are different. They may be too intense. Too unpredictable. Too prolonged. Or they may occur at developmental stages when we do not yet have enough biological or relational resources to integrate them. When this happens, the nervous system continues trying to do what it is designed to do: protect life. But the magnitude of the experience may temporarily exceed its usual capacity for organization. Contemporary research shows that, under these circumstances, the organism may reorganize the way it processes information about the environment, safety, danger, memory, and physiological responses. Not because the nervous system has stopped functioning. But because it is trying to adapt to extraordinary circumstances. A shift in the organism's priorities During threatening situations, the nervous system temporarily reorganizes its priorities. Whatever supports immediate survival becomes central. Other functions, equally important to everyday life but less urgent in that moment, move into the background. Digestion. Some processes related to growth and repair. Certain aspects of exploration, play, or curiosity. Even the ability to think calmly before acting may become temporarily limited when the organism's priority is to respond quickly. This does not mean these functions disappear. It means that the organism is distributing its resources in the way it considers most useful for dealing with the situation. From an evolutionary perspective, this makes sense.

The problem arises when the nervous system continues organizing much of its functioning as though the threat were still present long after the situation has ended. And that will be one of the questions we explore throughout the following articles. A profoundly intelligent response Perhaps one of the most important ideas in this chapter is also one of the simplest. The nervous system does not respond this way because it is broken. It responds because it is trying to protect what it considers most valuable. Life. Understanding this idea profoundly changes the way we look at trauma. We no longer see only symptoms. We begin to recognize adaptive strategies. We do not see an organism that has failed. We see an organism extraordinarily committed to survival. And precisely for that reason, it deserves to be understood with respect rather than judgment. Because the more deeply we understand the biology of these responses, the harder it becomes to interpret them as a personal defect. Science does not diminish the humanity of our experience. It illuminates it. Experience gives meaning Understanding that the nervous system responds to protect life is an important first step. But there is still a question many people ask. What does this feel like from the inside? Science can describe with great precision the physiological changes that occur during a potentially traumatic experience. It can measure heart rate, brain activity, stress-related hormones, or autonomic nervous system responses. Yet no graph can fully describe what it means to live through that experience. Because trauma is not experienced as a theory. It is experienced through the body. And often it begins with a sensation that is difficult to explain. Some people describe time as seeming to accelerate. Others feel that everything happens more slowly. Some remember every detail with extraordinary clarity. Others retain only fragments of what happened. Some experience an immediate impulse to run.

Or to defend themselves. Or to scream. And there are also people who discover, with surprise and sometimes shame, that their body could not move, speak, or react in the way they imagined they would. All of these experiences can be profoundly confusing. Especially when, later, we try to understand them through reason alone. The nervous system responds before thought One of the most important contributions of contemporary neuroscience is the understanding that many protective responses occur before we have time to consciously analyze them. The organism is continually evaluating its environment. Looking for signals of safety. Uncertainty. And possible threat. Much of this processing occurs automatically. Not because the brain wants to hide information from us. But because, from an evolutionary perspective, waiting to think carefully before responding could mean losing valuable time when survival was at stake. That is why, during a potentially traumatic experience, many people feel that their body "acted on its own." From the outside, this can seem strange. From a biological perspective, it makes sense. The organism is using mechanisms that evolution has preserved precisely because they increased the chances of survival. Understanding this can relieve a very common burden. The belief that, if we had reacted differently, everything would have turned out differently. Reality is much more complex. During situations of intense threat, many responses do not arise from conscious choice. They emerge from extraordinarily rapid biological systems whose primary function is to protect life. When the body does what the mind does not yet understand Often, suffering appears long after the experience itself has ended. A person may rationally know that they are safe now. And yet their organism may continue responding with an intense sense of alertness. This difference between what we know and what we feel can create enormous confusion.

"If it is already over… why am I still reacting this way?" It is a common question among people trying to understand trauma stored in the body, or the relationship between anxiety and the nervous system. Current research invites us to add an important nuance to this language. Rather than thinking of trauma as something literally "stored" inside the body, we now understand that potentially traumatic experiences can influence the way the nervous system organizes the perception of danger, memory, movement, emotions, and many other functions of the organism. In other words, the body is not holding on to the past out of stubbornness. It is responding according to what it learned about how to stay alive. And precisely because we are talking about learning, we are also talking about a deeply hopeful possibility. What the nervous system has learned can continue to change through new experiences. Not because we forget what happened. But because the organism remains plastic. It continues learning. It continues reorganizing. Experience always occurs within a context Another idea that science has made increasingly clear is that no nervous system response can be fully understood outside the context in which it emerged. The same situation can be experienced very differently by different people. Not because some are stronger than others. But because every organism arrives with a unique history. With a different developmental trajectory. With different relationships. With biological and emotional resources built throughout an entire lifetime. That is why, at Sentido Somático, we avoid comparing pain. There is no universal scale that allows us to decide which experience "should" affect someone more. What truly matters is understanding how that experience was lived by that organism at that particular moment in its history. Only from there can we begin talking about nervous system regulation, somatic healing, or any process oriented toward well-being. Because before asking how to change a response, we need to understand the context in which that response learned to exist. And understanding that context does not mean remaining trapped inside it. It means offering the organism an opportunity to feel seen before asking it to learn something new. Perhaps that is one of the deepest forms of respect we can offer our own body.

Does all of this mean that my organism is destined to respond the same way forever? For a long time, many people received messages that reinforced this idea. That trauma leaves an indelible mark. That the brain becomes damaged. That the body will never feel safe again. Today we know that this view is incomplete. Contemporary research shows us something deeply hopeful. The nervous system is a living organism. And one of the most extraordinary characteristics of living organisms is their capacity to continue learning. Learning never ends Neuroscience speaks of plasticity. But perhaps we can express it in simpler words. The organism continues reorganizing itself throughout life. Every meaningful experience leaves a trace. Some experiences expand our possibilities. Others help us protect ourselves. Others temporarily limit the ways in which we can respond. None of them, however, represents the end of our story. Learning continues. Not because we erase what we have lived through. But because life continues offering new experiences from which we can learn. Transformation does not mean erasing Sometimes we imagine healing as though the goal were to completely eliminate a survival response. But the nervous system does not work by erasing chapters of its history. It works by learning new ways of organizing experience. We are not trying to make the organism forget how to protect itself. We are helping it discover that today it has more resources with which to do so. This means that a person can still feel fear. And, at the same time, respond differently. They can continue remembering a difficult experience. And, little by little, stop living as though that experience were happening in the present moment. Transformation does not mean becoming someone who never feels again.

It means expanding our capacity to respond with greater flexibility to what life presents us. Creating new experiences of safety At Sentido Somático, we often speak about creating conditions that support experiences of safety. We choose these words carefully. Not because we can control everything that happens in our lives. But because we can participate in creating certain kinds of environments. A respectful relationship. A space where we can rest. But they can become new reference points for the nervous system. The organism learns that other possibilities exist. That not every relationship involves threat. You do not have to prove that it should already be somewhere else. Perhaps it is enough to offer it a different experience. An experience in which it does not have to fight against itself. Because, many times, the deepest learning does not begin when we force the organism to behave differently. It begins when we stop treating its responses as an enemy. And begin recognizing them as part of a story that can still continue to unfold.

Understanding also transforms learning We often think that change begins when we manage to modify a response in the body. Yet many times, the first change happens much earlier. It happens when our understanding of that response changes. For years, many people have lived with their reactions accompanied by fear, shame, or frustration. They have felt that their body betrays them, that anxiety means weakness, or that their survival responses are evidence that something is defective within them. Contemporary science invites us to look at this story differently. Understanding how the nervous system works does not automatically eliminate suffering, but it can profoundly transform the relationship we develop with it. When we understand that many of our responses emerged as attempts at adaptation, judgment begins to lose its power and a new space opens for curiosity and care. At the same time, research reminds us of something deeply important. We are still learning.

Every year, new studies expand our understanding of nervous system regulation, learning, memory, inflammation, neuroplasticity, development, and chronic stress. Science continues refining its models and expanding what we know. And this does not represent a limitation. It is precisely one of its greatest strengths. Because good science never stops asking questions. What we understand with greater clarity Today there is broad agreement around several fundamental principles. We know that the nervous system responds in an integrated way when it perceives a threat. We know that these responses are deeply adaptive. We know that the organism continually learns from experience. We know that potentially traumatic experiences can influence the way we perceive danger, regulate emotions, build relationships, and respond to the world. And we also know that this learning remains open to change. Not because the past disappears. But because living organisms retain the capacity to continue learning. What we are still investigating Many questions remain open. How do individual differences influence recovery? Why do some people develop particular responses while others do not, even after experiencing similar events? What role do social support, rest, movement, somatic therapy, the quality of relationships, and other factors play in processes of adaptation? How do the nervous system, immune system, metabolism, and microbiome interact over time? Research continues to move forward precisely by trying to answer these questions. And many of the answers we consider well established today will likely continue to become more nuanced over the coming years. Understanding changes the relationship Perhaps the most important contribution this article can offer is not simply an explanation of how the nervous system works. Perhaps it is a reminder that understanding profoundly changes the way we approach our own experience.

When we stop thinking that our organism is responding "wrongly" and begin understanding that it is responding from what it learned in order to protect us, something changes. Curiosity begins to take the place of judgment. Compassion has room to emerge. And the body stops feeling like an adversary that needs to be controlled. But one based on respect for an organism that has been learning throughout an entire lifetime. And that, precisely because it is still alive, retains the capacity to continue learning. The scientific understanding of trauma has advanced enormously over the last several decades. Today we know much more about how the nervous system organizes survival responses, how it learns from experience, and how it can continue reorganizing throughout life. At the same time, science continues investigating fundamental questions. How do the nervous system, immune system, and endocrine system interact after potentially traumatic experiences? What factors support greater flexibility in recovery? How do connection, rest, movement, emotional regulation, and experiences of safety influence the organism's learning processes? These questions remain open and continue to be explored in research centers around the world. Far from representing a limitation, this ongoing inquiry reflects the nature of science itself.

Living science does not offer final answers. It continues asking better questions. And perhaps that attitude can also inspire us in our own lives. Instead of demanding immediate answers from ourselves, we can learn to remain curious about our experience. Because the nervous system also learns when it no longer feels compelled to defend itself constantly. And that possibility remains open for as long as we continue living.
